Hi,
I started a painting company in college (independent, no a 'college pro' rip-off) with a few friends. That was in 2001, so it's been 10 years. We do a lot in the summer and winter break. Interior repaints, exterior repaints, decks, drywall, carpentry, the usual stuff. I'm in grad school so that is my full time job, but I can't say no to repeat customers who need more work. Seems like a great forum with lots of useful info!

My name is Thomas Rodgers and I own my own business. I've been painting roughly 10 years and am always looking for insight from seasoned pros. I have been watching the discussions for some time and felt it would be only right and polite to introduce myself. I occasionally have some advice (or need to ask some advice) but I know that just throwing out my 10 cents without a "hello" is poor form.
My company name is A Brush Above and I primarily do repaint but have spent the last year doing large new res stain grade homes. I have done new res, remodel, commercial (no industrial) and I own 6 rigs from Titan 440's to Graco gmax 7900, to Titan air assisted and HVLPs. I love painting and my wife thinks I'm a painting nerd. Heck I read books like Jewitt's "Finishing" for recreation. Maybe I am a nerd. So be it.

I have done some work for some cool customers and ultimately want to see my business grow on my terms. I don't need help advertising (I actually do not try to advertise at all, straight word of mouth at this point) but I do need solid advice about better techniques as the situation arises.

I wish I had the luxury of being an apprentice in a union (at least for the regimented teaching and OJT by protocols), but have spent the last few years in trial by fire and have done alright for myself. I have worked under an amazing painter out of Ft. Collins, Colorado (Loveland to be precise) and wished I paid better attention in the time I was there. I am glad for the lessons I have learned along the way but would appreciate good, sound advice as the need arises. I am NOT an apartment painter, nor am I knocking apartment painters. I am not production, but I am not "custom" either. I believe my work is solid, but I know it can be better, faster, cleaner, more ordered etc. I have 4 employees trimmed down from 8 currently, and am trying to find the best long term fit for me and my business.

In general, I want to be the best at what I do, and will (and do) appreciate any insight those out there may have and want to do my best at offering advice to those who could learn from the mistakes I have made along the way.

Thanks for letting me jump into your guys world.....

Thomas

HI;

I work with my dad doing general home repair / remodel work. We've also been the GC for a couple new projects. My dad used to do exterior paint jobs full time back in the late 80's.
We're getting into a few more painting jobs again and I came across this forum when reading what people though of Aura. I just painted my own kitchen with it and I am quite happy with it's performance. I'm planing to spray a exterior with it next month.

I licensed in CA for General Building, General Engineering, Framing, Asbestos.

I've been picking up smaller projects recently that require fewer trades associated with the job. That's what I'm here!

Basically, I have a few questions. I am EPA certified for lead and going to bid on a project tomorrow morning. The house is about seventy years old with sturdy as can be paint. However, the last time the building was painted was in the late seventies and used a lead based paint.

My concern isn't the lead, but more along the lines of materials and suppliers recommended for this task.

My bid will include a few custom window replacements, stucco patchwork, minor siding repair and paint.

The questions are:

I will first repair siding then all damaged areas of paint, power wash, reglaze the windows not to be replaced, then install the new windows, repair the stucco, then prime with 123 with a dark tint to give greater coverage of the two paint coats. Which brand of exterior do you, the painting pros, recommend for this application? Should I use Benjamin, Valspar, Behr premium ultra plus... ect...? I'm going to shoot using a 12" wide fan w/ a high volume tip and roll over for the 123, then paint with the same tip for the paint but not roll over.

The price of the materials is of the least concern for the owner and I would like to offer a materials warranty from myself based on the manufacturer. However, I don't want to be ripped off when a similar quality product is offered at a lower price.

Thanks for all of your help!
