Default Random Thoughts

This thread is not for political discussion or work stuff. There are other areas for that.
Keep it clean.

How come it's called the weekend, when Sunday is the start of the week?

I always thought it referred to the act of trolling (fishing) rather than the creatures who live under bridges.

Reminder, all of the rules that apply elsewhere on the forum will also apply here. And yes, keep the politics over at the PZ.

In the future, if thread is ever in need of a bump, simply cut/paste the current @Underdog sig line.

It will be perfect, and sure to prompt a chuckle/reaction.

This thread looks like a great one-stop-shop for levity. I like.

I've always thought both references were very applicable.

The fishing one moreso just someone luring others along a path, with no real serious negative repurcussions.

The troll under the bridge one carrying the image of someone embracing negativity and popping up every now and again to cause havoc and harm.

Once again you have made me spew my drink onto the iPad screen. Good thing it is easy to clean.

And to your point, I'm really depressed. Does that mean I know too much?

And one more thought. I think from now on PACman needs to submit his avatar pics to a review board. He's been putting some weird chit up lately.

Same here. I remember it being used it that sense back in the days of Usenet: making a post with the intent of seeing how many users would "bite". I think that even reflects prior use predating the Internet. I do know it was used for the practice by college-age women in the '70s of dressing up to go out on the town...

I think the troll=ogre sense arose as the trolling posts became more and more inflammatory.

I seem to be always trying to quantify things...put a "percentage of effectiveness" on things that probably can't be measured in such a way.

Here's an example of the way my weird brain works. Check out the ratio of "Thanked" to "Posts" under each member's avatar. Seems to me everyone should be trying to achieve a 2 to 1 "Thanked x amount of times in x amount of Posts" ratio.

Guys like Roamer, JMays, Repaint, Wolfgang rule...we can only hope to come close to them. Yep, like I said, I have strange random thoughts.

You mean we should have an elitist club ,sort of like the Five Timers Club on SNL?

Ha, I keep an eye on that ratio as well.

When the guys you mentioned post, I listen.

I listen as well. Of course, there are plenty of others with very helpful posts that don't quite make the 2 to 1 SemiProJohn criterion of effectivenes. All the Mods, that older guy with nearly 30,000 posts, and a host of others.

I'm very grateful for all the help!

Interestingly, almost everyone who has posted in this thread so far is somewhat close to that ratio but nobody exceeds it. You come the closest - nice work.

I'm very grateful for all the help!

Keep in mind too that PT didn't always have a 'thank feature. Some of the PT old timers may have had a thousand or more posts before the 'thanks feature was added.

I always thought 2 to 1 was a good ratio to strive for also. A few people though are at 1 to 1 or better. MIZZOU, and TJ both do/did IIRC.
Edit: maybe I'm thinking of a different ratio. Anyway, doesn't matter.

I had a random thought the other morning about some of you Canadian guys up there in the cold without sausage gravy.

Down south here it's everywhere. Even fast food joints usually have it. This was my Hardees breakfast the other morning.

I've been on a bit of a gravy binge since it came up in that other thread a while back. Made some bacon gravy this morning with homemade (Bisquick) biscuits.

That's the kind of weekend brunch that calls for a post-gravy nap.
