Cool Newbie :)

Hello to all!I found this site actually by luck! I was searching on Google and BOOM a question I was wondering about brought me to this site and I saw all the great topics and thought why not, why dont I sign up! I have painted on and off for about 5 years - over a 20 year period, I was working construction, trying to learn framing, but the company I worked for kept me at one point, with no growth.. so I just thought why dont I just do what I know and just do that! Painting! So I am at the point of starting my own business. I might work for people here or there, but I want to set up a business when I do get jobs and then eventually just do my own thing full time.I'm using the search on here allot so I might start a topic from time to time when I can't find something. If I make a mistake and there is topics, please link me to them well I hope all are doing good in their jobs & business and again thanks for helping out a new guy set up his business and with different questions!

loco,

The collapse of the construction industry has prompted many like your self to become independent contractors. Painting, in particular, is an industry where many people believe starting a business is simple. Buy a brush, ladder and rolling pole, and away you go. Consider the competition you will face in this industry. Most start ups will be undercutting well established painting contractors who have operated a legitimate business for years. This does not sit well with them, particularly since they survived the collapse, only to find themselves competing with lowball hacks.

You will hear that having at least four years of work experience with another company or apprenticeship program is a requirement to becoming a contractor. This may be true in some states, and is absolutely critical for someone who decides to run solo as a small business owner. However, if you have an appropriate amount of business knowledge, integrity, and a drive for success, you will hire the right people and utilize the resources needed to reach your goals. Good Luck!
