Back in the summer of 2007, and having no one at work to commiserate with, I searched online for a painters discussion group and landed at Paint Talk. After reading many interesting posts, I realized that the site was primarily geared towards painting contractors. However, having never operated a business myself, I wondered how much could I really contribute without quickly becoming obscured. So I took a chance drawing on my own experiences working for other contractors, and how that helped shape me into the painter and employee I am today. And only for the generousity of the Paint Talk community, I am recognized today for my contributions to the forum, and for being a professional painter.

Thank you!

My name is John. In the year 1960, I was born into a struggling working class family in San Francisco CA. My father worked as a union baker in an industrial facility while my mother struggled to raise six children. Opportunities were scarce growing up, so I took advantage whenever possible to earn a few bucks. My Italian Grandfather taught me basic construction which helped pave the way for my enthusiasm for carpentry, concrete, and tile work. Painting was always part of the process and I discovered I was pretty good at it.

It also turned out my uncle was a painter, and he hired me for a couple of summers in high school, and for a couple of years after that.

By this time, it was the early 1980's and good trade jobs were hard to come by. My family never entertained the possibility of college, so my only choices were painting or the military. After being rejected by many union paint shops, I landed with a small painting contractor who himself was the son of one of the largest union shops in San Francisco during the Forties and Fifties. This man knew everything about business, painting, work ethics and integrity. I was fortunate to spend eleven years learning from him.

My residential painting career eventually morphed into industrial painting, where I learned a whole new set of skills. It was during this phase of my painting career that I officially received a Journey level painter classification from the Labor Board of California. If it hadn't been for the training I received from this company, I would never be where I am today.

Finally, I discovered an opportunity for a Cal Trans (California Transportation) bridge painter position. I always thought I could handle painting a bridge like the Golden Gate, or the magnificant Bay Bridge, and here I was, face to face with that opportunity! But after passing a series of tests for Cal Trans, I found myself waiting with no return calls. Meanwhile, another opportunity presented itself with a major utility, and I took it.

Fifteen years later I'm still here honing new skills and working with the same enthusiasm I had when I worked with my Grandpa forty five years ago.

Thanks for reading a little about me!

John

I think my favorite part of this contest is reading the stories.

For someone like me who is fairly new to this forum, I'm grateful to get to know a little about the man behind the brain. You're depth of knowledge is humbling. Thank you.
