In 1976 my parents and their seven teenage children moved to east TN and started a family farm. I was born later on that year, and spent my childhood involved in the day to day operations of a small dairy/vegetable farm.

By the late 80's it was becoming harder and harder to even get by financially as a small farm owner, and in 1990 my father sold the farm in a government buy out program. Having been a union painter most of his life before becoming a farmer, the most logical thing for him to do was start a painting business.

I was already accustomed to working along side him on the farm, and almost from the beginning I helped him after school and during the summer. He formally dubbed me his apprentice my junior year in high school when I began participating in a co-op work program at school.

Having had access to good training and lots of experience, my father did well with painting and quickly established a solid business. My apprenticeship was a slow one. I spent years learning prep work, clean up, shop duties, etc.. About five years in, he began training me to spray. That was one of his big advantages over the local competition. Professionally trained spray people are rare, at least in this area.

Other than a few short hiatuses, I worked with him until shortly before he passed away. We did a wide variety of painting, everything from residential to industrial. I feel lucky to have learned the trade from him. In addition to being a talented mechanical painter, he was an intelligent guy and was quite good at implementing efficient systems.

In the spring of 2010 my sister was ready for a career change and joined me in continuing my fathers business. As much as possible I am training her in the manner that I was trained, though I've had to go a little quicker with her. I didn't feel like it would be practical in this situation to have her only sand, scrape and putty for a year. Maybe next year We'll start spray training.

I don't follow traditional business models these days. I've found that I don't have an aptitude for it. We are available to our existing customers just like we've always been, and any new customers in the east TN tri-cites area, can contact me through Maria at Arte Bella. http://www.johnsoncityprofessionalpainter.com/

Painting is my life's work. And though its not that glamorous of a profession, it's as good a trade as any. I try to embrace it with gusto, if a painter I'll be, might as well be the best one I can be.

I have very much enjoyed my time here at PT. I like to talk shop with other knowledgeable tradesmen, and have gotten to know some good solid people here, from whom I have, and will continue to, learn from.

You didn't have to thank me again, J.
I was just tired of seeing my name on top (cuz I was the loser).

Thanks for sharing J. That's so cool you got to work with your dad for so long. I'm curious what "traditional business models don't work for you" means. Feel free to pm sometime if you want. Thanks for all the good stuff you bring to PT
