As true as it is, it really sounds like a very bitter contractor wrote it. Most consumers won't give it the time of day.

"A good rule of thumb for estimates is that the labor will be double the amount of materials. A smaller job will be more for labor. "

You know - this article gave me a great idea - I am no longer going to give free estimates from now on unless the homeowner show that they are serious. And I have an idea as to how to go about doing this....

I didn't read the article, but if it says that labor will be twice materials, the author is either insane or broke (maybe both).
If this were true, a 2 gallon job (typical bedroom wall job using $20 paint) would be $120. The only people doing work like that are the $99 a room guys, or people who simply don't know any better.
My material costs are typically less than 10% of the price I charge. I'd like to find that author and slap him upside the head with a good dose of reality.

I would go out of business the next day. For example I am completing a job that paints ran about $300.00 My net will be over $4000.00. This was for two large areas both with over 1200 sq feet of room space.

This was my thought as a read the article. I also agree with Homey, this was a bitter contractor who is out of business.

Its the chicken and the egg...the flip side is if you work from your actual labor costs and then bump materials up to half of that (instead of the approx 10% as mentioned above), we would all be making a killing on materials. It wouldnt surprise me if there are those who would think this was a good idea.

I also didn't like that materials estimate either. It's the one thing that shows how little the author knows about what he is talking about.
Maybe I'll email him and set him straight.

it just really seemed amateur the way the article was written even though it made sense....that is a terrible rule of thumb and it kind of made the guy and his article lose credibility in my mind
