Default How to get a free website...

Getting a site up and running is not hard or costly. Find a geek at a coffee shop or a network group meeting in your area. Work out a deal to promote his web design business in exchange for a free site. I ran in to one guy who did my site. He was starting his web design business and need to build up his portfolio. It turns out he was better then most design companies in the area. I was very pleased with the work and he only charged me a one time setup fee and a monthly hosting fee. Last time I spoke to him he was still looking to add more sites to his portfolio.

Website designers and good SEO companies are so often exclusive.

Getting the jobs you want that pay the most has everything to do with Marketing. A website does nothing unless you use it as part of your advertising system. It's best used for your references. A full color display ad in your local paper along with your web address can work really well. The first time I myself placed a large display ad in the paper I received a few calls right away and landed a $3500 Dollar exterior paint job. I have been using this ad about once a month. I used to go under certain places in the paper such as choose a pro but never again. My ad goes right into the first 2 pages and it is seen. Not so much by someone looking for a painter but mostly for those thinking about looking fr a painter in the back of theri mind.

Having a system that gets us away from word of mouth and jobs we don't want a great advertising system gets us the work we want. The jobs that pay the most.

Try this

Seems its not too difficult to build a basic site using template programs and host it on braveheart or godaddy and others.

...just so you can have a site to direct potential clients to...

If he sucks, you still own the domain name and have a subscription to hosting, so you can just go with someone else. Or, if you cannot find someone else affordable, you could just go without a website for a bit. If all you pay for is hosting and the domain, you are going to be out less than $50 for the entire year.

Agreed, it is not difficult at all...just takes time. Another good one to check-out is 1and1.com. They have the best prices I have found.

Also, I think in some instances, a website can hurt you if not done right. Think about the image you want to convey to your clients. If your website does not convey the same image, they might think twice about giving you the job.
