Good website (even if it's just informational).

Business cards are a must (carry box in truck).

Get your proposals down pat, layout/readability. Be prompt about quoting.

Use calendar or other method to schedule. No faster way to lose a job than to not show up.

And become good friends with your store or whatever work you do. If you work apartments become good friends with the apartment owner or HOA managers etc.

Edit:
Get camera or use phone. Lots of pictures help. Before, during, after. Also good for proposals (shown what you plan on working on, and equally importantly explain what you WON'T be working on or doing).

We get more work from FB than our website.

Where ever you can put business cards hang them. Get some cheap yard signs and some sort of signage for your vehicle (magnetics are pretty cheap).

Never ever tell a customer you can do some thing and you really have no clue.

Be on time. When you say I will be here at 8am be there at 10 of 8. Remember they may have work, drop a child off or what ever.

Have a note book handy

Yup. I am starting to do a lot of texting as well. If you have them send name, address , email to your smart phone then you will always have the contact info with you. Plus you can always stay in contact when in meetings, up on a ladder or something and give quick replies.
