Default Can't get anyone to do the job!

My FIL moved to Northern Idaho last year. Rob and I have always done the work on his homes or found someone to do what we can't.
So he wants to insulate and drywall his 2 car garage. He goes to HD and gets a name and calls 2 from the phone book.

The one from HD gave him a price, but won't give Insurance and License info until he pays?! Can't find his name on the Idaho License site, course I could be spelling it wrong because he never gave Dad a written bid or card. Dad likes because he had coffee and watched TV with him for 1/2 an hour.

One from the phone book never returned call.

Other from phone book never showed up!

So I get on Idaho Contractor site to look for contractor, fill out a question form that LOOKS like it is part of the site and end up at Reliable Remodelers!

It may be easier for Rob to drive up and do it!

Only 3???
Can't get anyone???

I realize it varies from region to region, but before the big bust, "12 and no replies" would have meant "business as usual" out here

Still, only 3 and no good ones would mean you didn't call the right ones
Get ye to the local C of C!!!

My insurance company will only fax once asked.. there is no "official" card or anything that I actually own from them. Weird.. maybe. but that is how it is, they don't just sent it to anyone, they will send it to whoever needs it on a case to case bases. I am in Kansas, not the U but it may be a deal like that.

For homeowners, I have a certificate I include in all bids, along with license.
For GCs, I call insurance co and they add GC and fax to them.

C of C had 2 painters, no drywallers. One painter was named "Hay-U-Painting, LLC"
It was an interesting search! Google it and top results are all service magic, rr, etc. Had to go to phone directory listings, 3 pages and only 1 had a website and only a few emails! Don't really want to start making phone calls on a Sunday.

I think we could all take a look at how "accessible" we are to our customers!

Same here. They do that so you can't alter the dates on it and keep it after your policy has expired without being renewed or if you would cancle it.

They're good about getting it to those who request it though. Fax or email the same day or by regular mail within 2-3 days.

Just curious, are you both required to have insurance as part of license?

That sounds a little fishy to me. We do not need licences in MA, but my insurance carriers (liability and workers comp) will fax and/or mail certificates at a moment's notice. Idaho's mileage may differ.

A number of years ago my FIL hired a painter because, as he said, "I liked the cut of his jib". Decision based on an emotional "connection" not the wording and pricing of the contract. I smelled a rat and John did get burned. It was one of those College Pro, Student Pro, Certa Pro or some such type of Hax Pro.

Chris, if you and Rob have half a mind to do a road trip, I would support that inclination. It's family and it would be a nice little break for you. I hear Northern ID is beautiful.

Idaho does not have much of a licensing program, I looked into when we thought of following him there a few years ago. We had lived next door to each other for a long time! I miss the old fart! We were there in October. It is beyond beautiful!
May be time for a road trip!

Which part of northern Idaho? I live in montana about 2 hours from the border and know a lot, and I meant a lot of great drywallers, who would love to take the job!

Yeah CD'A is beautiful. We were planning on moving there because of the shortage of professional painters & drywallers, but decided on Austin Texas instead. Wer'e about three hours away from theCD'A in this weather, and I know at least a few that would be willing to make the drive. I always support hiring local but there is not a lot there!!! I hope everything works out and if not call me and I'll get give you some phone numbers.
