Ford 5.4 V8 coil packs?

I know this is way off topic but how many of you own a Ford with the V8 5.4? I bought a 2005 Ford F150 and seem to be blowingthrough coil packs every 2 months, All 8 nhave been replace 3 times and getting ready for a 4th replacement, I have called the Ford dealers and they said they see this alot but there is no recall nor will there be one any time soon. Replacing all 8 costs me just over a grand, this is killing me, I just bought this truck 5 months ago and still have 3 years left to pay it off.

Sell it. This is simple math. $1k +/- x 4 times a year = too much to spend on any vehicle. Even if it was paid off I still wouldn't keep fixing it.

That's strange because F150's are pretty solid. Something else has to be going on causing this issue.

I guess it's the 5.4 that has the issue, I asked a few friends on FB and they all said the 5.4 eats coil packs just like mine. it melts or warps the plastic clip that locks them in place, one the clip melts thats it they are done wet days so far are the worst, so it does make some sense, but why no recall or even a notice.

DeanV 02-12-2013 10:09 AM

my 2003 F 150 has not had any problems with that.

mattvpaint 02-12-2013 03:05 PM

I have a 03 as well never had that problem. Friend had a 05 and he did I gusse its only that year they changed something for 05 and didn't work lol the older ones are good and the newer ones as well herd a lot of good with the 5.0 they switched to as well.

03 F-250 super duty ..........no problems with coil packs

bodean614 02-12-2013 05:58 PM

Had 07 ford and at 70k cam phaser went bad and needed new motor. Traded it for 2012 dodge hemi and can't believe how much better the dodge pulls our camper. Plus I feel like I'm driven old muscle car with 395 hp.

So far all the testing done just shows the coil packs. I am bringing it to my mechanic since the check engine light is now stuck on and it is miss firing very bad, I told him it flashes and he said that is most likely the coil pack, other wise from what he has see it with the Ford check engine light would stay solid, that still dsn't mean it s the coils. I aam ready to trade it in but need to fix it so I get as much as I can for it. I don't know what I will try to get, might be another Ford with a smaller engine.

just had the same problem with my 08 f250. All of the coil packs went within a month. The flashing engine light means multiple misfires. Mine started doing it so bad that it melted the inside if the catalytic converters because of the raw fuel that was being dumped into them. I had the cops (coil on plug) and the cats changed last august but it is missing again now and the fuel mileage is dropping. The design of the deep spark plug wells allows condensation to build in them which is why yours runs worse on wet days. If you were to pull the back left cop on a damp or wet day, it will probably have water in the plug well. Mine is a company truck with a gas card so i can deal with it as long as they want to keep paying repairs and the extra fuel, if it were my personal truck i would dump it.

The Triton V8 sucks. I've had several including my current utility body in which I had a new engine installed a year ago.

Change the air intake and the exhaust then it really comes alive and more like that old muscle car. I love my '09 Ram

This one has 133k and so far I have only put roughly 3k on it in 5 months but changed the oil at 3 months.

This is my personal truck was going to make it a work truck but not now I am going to have it fixed this one last time and dump it.

Figures I buy a $500.00 crap box and have a mechanic check it over, I spend 10 grand and drive it away with out having it checked, Why am I this dumb, I hope I get a good trade value for it, the body is in great shape, every thing looks real clean inside and out even the engine sparkles. Now if it ran as good as it looked I wouldbe loving it, I like the F150 but starting to dislike Fords again. 5 payments in and it's already on it's way out the door.

Funny thing is if you have the traction control on you can hardly get the tires to break loose. But with it off its hard to keep them from spinning. Would love to change exhaust and intake and prob. Will. Also maybe a performance chip.

AbsolutePainting 02-12-2013 10:48 PM

I just sold an '02 f-250 with a v-10 and 167k miles. One coil pack failure during my days of ownership. You should stress to ur mechanic to use the di-electric grease that is included with replacements to seal out water and moisture. A good friend has a 5.4 with 268k...far from a crap motor.

I believe the Superchips programer is the way to go. It really lit up my '06 5.7 Hemi

bodean614 02-12-2013 11:03 PM

Only bummer is fuel mileage. Pulling camper only get 8-9 miles to the gallon. Lol.

mattvpaint 02-13-2013 11:07 AM

Sorry making a correction its 285,000 just seen I put 3 my bad. hope I didn't jinxs it now lol

Bender 02-13-2013 09:25 PM

Real trucks don't have spark plugs.

I just started this pig after it sitting for almost 2 weeks and wow does it run even worse, the check engine light is freaking out, it feels like it is a 2 cylinder now.

mattvpaint 02-24-2013 12:19 AM

I replaced coil packs on cylinders 6&7 man was it easy, 5 minutes each. I did pull all the others to check them, 6&7 look like they came out of the ocean after sitting there for a few years, truck runs smooth, I did make one huge mistake, I dropped a bolt when putting the last coil pack back in, I have no idea where it went, I ordered another bolt cost me 18 cents. getting the check engine light reset then looking to trade it in before it craps out again.
