Default Our Spouses/SOs and PT

In some of the posts recently there have been some references to members' wives and their reactions to PT. Plus there is the What Not To Say To Your Spouse thread currently enjoying a revival.

So, how does your wife/husband, girlfriend/boyfriend, or significant other feel about the forum and your level of participation in it?

I know that my own wife's feelings about PT are less than positive and that whenever I attempt to share something with her the typical response I get is a noncommittal grunt. And I can still remember her reaction when I informed her that I was going to become a mod - that lump on my noggin still hasn't totally gone away.

Wow, that's almost 100% my situation. I generally consider myself a regular member of two forums at this point. This one and an online poker forum, which I've been a member of for years. My wife generally gives the same non-committal grunt of approval/disapproval as yours unless something really interesting comes up.

I think she generally approves of this forum more than the poker one as I joined this forum at a point when I was having trouble staying interested in painting and was starting to hate my job. That and I do seem to have learned quite a bit from you guys as I have zero interaction with any of the other painters around town.

A couple of years ago I became a mod on the poker forum and pretty much got exactly the same reaction you got. More verbal abuse however and comments about how much time I was going to end up spending on there.

At the end of the day, she has her facebook and I have you guys and my 'poker buddies'. It's a miracle we still talk to each other.

I don't spend that much here or on other sites so my wife doesn't really care. The only social media that is taking up our, mostly her, time is setting up a face book business site.

When my wife sees me on the Pt instead of doing chores she says "Having fun with your PaintTalk butt buddies?"

Other than that it's a grunt with a dismissive attitude towards it.

I hear talking to each other is overrated.

My wife and daughter still think I'm being duped by a bunch of teenagers rather than actually participating in a professional forum. But then again, they know I'm an online gamer, so I've already set a precedent.

My wife just likes to give me a hard time. Same with my business partner.

See I'm what you would call a 'paint nerd'. I enjoy reading up on new technology, learning about new forms of applications and coatings. When PPG bought out Dulux I was in the paint store everyday talking to my rep about new products they had, or I've read up on. I've even spent a few hours in the past on YouTube looking for different ways to do the same thing, trying to find the 'perfect application method'.

I sometimes read posts to my wife. She tells me what to post back and I tell her I'll set up her own account. She won't take me up on it. I'm not gonna post what she says because she's very witty so I don't want to raise your expectations of me.

She notices what age you all are by your word choices like "duped".

She enjoys the off topics but is bored by the constant droning on about paint.

Oh yeah, and she thinks y'all are funny.
She's glad for me to have a bunch of moronic friends who can't just come over whenever they want.

My ex used to dismiss my participation with slight amusement seasoned with contempt, although I think she felt it an improvement from my *mmorpg days of 14hr sessions doing optical hat runs in the Den of Rancor

This reward points thing really helped redeem myself too. Years later, in fact just last week I mentioned to her how this PT has paid off with the $20 gift card. Pfff.. showed her!

You know, I never thought of that as a comeback. It may be the first positive I'll be able to point out to her (other than, "Hey! Better PT than having me into p--n, gambling, or online gaming!")

Lowering their expectations is key for them to appreciate our activities.

My wife used to get irritated when I'd spend a lot / too much time starring at the computer monitor. Especially when CT was the only thing going back in 05/06 ish. I tried moving the pc out near the tv as though that would count as spending more time together.. Yet another epic fail. In her eyes a forum was equally as addicting as online gaming. Finding a note on the counter one day saying 'Dr Phil has an episode on gaming addiction coming on that I really think you should watch.', was my last straw - So I left for a few years.
I came back after stumbling across the app. The app used on my mobile devices is so convenient and more accepted within the house. Today everyone has their own iPads and can do what they want, when they want including my wife. It's a win-win.

So, was moving out difficult?

I have to admit, my wife would rather have me pounding away on a dirty key board, socializing with my virtual friends, then wallowing on the couch, watching football, and spilling pasta sauce as I shovel noodles in my face.
