Ever consider adopting a 46yr old Canadian? Dad?

I am a spender. I just cannot save $$. I've learned that it's just money after all so it gets spent. Right now I have maybe $500 in the bank.

I budget out the checks, then spend em.

That leads to a drive for bigger checks ha! But I've hired a financial planner to help hide my money from me next year. I really need to stop spending my $$ so I can have a retirement in 30 years.

The old adage, "Always pay yourself first." should be, "Always contribute to your retirement fund first." Although that is actually what the first quote is referring to. Trust me that thirty years will go by in a flash.

Sorry for the derail.

Let's mix it up:

What's the most expensive Christmas present you ever bought?

Me: In 2002 I got my wife a 2001 Chevy lumina $11,000

Or better yet : what's the most CREATIVE present you ever gave?

I think the most creative gift I've ever given someone was on this day roughly 20yrs ago. I gave them THE STREET.

I was renting a condo in Vancouver with a buddy of mine. He left town to visit his family over the holidays. I was doing graveyards at a halfway house for Federal inmates over the holidays while the regular guy was on vacation, thus effectively leaving me spending Christmas completely alone which I was fine with as I'd be sleeping all day anyways.

On Christmas Eve, I woke up late afternoon to hear a lot of chatter and music downstairs. I grabbed a bat and went downstairs to find 6 people drinking beer, eating pizza, their crap lying all over the place, the kitchen a mess, etc. They took one look at me and my bat and just about crapped themselves. Told me my buddy said it would be ok for all of them to stay at our place over the holidays, but I guess he never bothered to tell me anything about it or even ask if it would be ok. No way was I going to be trying to sleep all day with them partying downstairs or leaving the place a disaster.

I told them to GTFO, give me their key and don't come back. I felt kind of bad about it for about 10 minutes. Tore into my buddy when he got back and moved out a week later. Never spoke to him again.

Amongst my friends at the time, that gift was the stuff legends were created from.

Thirty years ago, we adopted our son a few weeks before Christmas. That turned out to be pretty expensive. Neither of us has topped that one yet.

^^^^^QFT

I don't really consider that a derail. It makes a huge difference 30 years later.

The converse to Driftweed's comment about buying things because it's just money..."it's just stuff".

Wife and I had an anniversary earlier this month. Got her a dozen roses and delivered them to her office.

That evening she gave me a big hug and proceeded to tell me how beautiful they were. And then went on to say how the fact that I did that reassured her how I felt about her, our marriage, and our anniversary.

I gave her a hug back, patted her on the back and said: "Don't read too much into it Honey.".

She obviously knows my sense of humor.

I can see why it's been so important for you to finish that garage....

One would think that.

Just a really good, secure marriage. Despite what some would believe, I do have a big heart. There isn't a day that goes by that I'm not thankful for being married to her. Not saying we don't have our differences at times.

Default What did you get your significant other?

Divorce papers? Anyone?

IMO, nothing quite says Merry Christmas like:

"See you in court!''
