Default Where did everybody go?

Up until about a week ago, I've probably visited PT only a handful of times in the past 6+ years. I don't know why I quit coming on here. Back when I registered, I was just an employee for a painting company, so I didn't comment much (obvious by my post count), but especially around 2011ish-2013ish, I would be on here most every day reading.
Now, it's like there was a mass exodus since then! Where did everyone go? There used to be a LOT of activity and people would discuss anything and everything! (I even remember a lively discussion, with lots of opinions, about whether you should roll from left to right, or right to left... So maybe the old days aren't ALL good).
Oddly enough, I still remember a lot of the old screen names on here! I can hardly remember what happened yesterday, but these names have stuck for some reason. I enjoyed posts from a lot of different members. Some of them that I remember are still on here:

Wolfgang
RH
DeanV
Capainter
Chrisn
Rbriggs82

Some have disappeared, unfortunately:

Brushslingers
Vermontpainter
DaArch
Scotiadawg (think he retired)
Steve Richards
There was a cool Australian guy
And a paint chemist, can't remember his name
Anyone know what happened to Slickshift? I think he was one of the original moderators. He was hilarious.
I also see all o the really old threads are deleted.

Where did these guys, and all the others go? Why are there so few people on this forum anymore? There is a wealth of information here and an excellent opportunity to discuss topics with other professionals.

It's just an opinion, but I think a lot of feelings got hurt. Many who got banned after expressing their discontent with either the Mods, other members, political views, or how much money someone made, never bothered to return. Maybe they were hoping they'd be sorely missed and extended a public apology from PT. Ha!

There were also rumors that many migrated to a more grown up Painting Forum. I'm not that serious about painting, so I never went. I was also afraid that it might have made me into an actual entrepreneur making big bucks. Nope. Not for me. I like the simple life.

Yep. It was rumored to be more serious than Paint Talk.

I have a question;
What ever happened to Lilpaintchick? Last time I saw her on Paint Talk was just before I got banned. Maybe she missed me, or something. lol.

I couldn't open the video on my work computer. So my reply is to the comment.

I like the conversational tone of Paint Talk. Maybe it's because there isn't so many distractions with pictures. I can understand the millenials hating that.

We're not quite sure what happened to Lil. One day she was here and the next gone, hopefully she's alright.

That's disappointing to me. I'm in a few groups on FB, but I just don't like the format. And the ones I'm in don't do a good job vetting prospective members, so my FB feed gets clogged up with the exact same newbie questions over and over and over. And when I go on FB, it's usually to catch up with friends, not to talk about painting. So I'd just prefer to keep the two separate.
I wish there were more people on PT these days.

I haven't heard of a more serious PT but I am a member of some the Facebook groups. I think the lower activity here has a lot to do with both the start of Facebook and when the pt app was removed and switched to Tapatalk.

Facebook is a lot faster paced and topics tend to fall away faster which I don't particularly care for, plus I kinda hate facebook as a whole.

I didn't get the love for the pt app, to me Tapatalk is just as good or even better. Some people just couldn't get used to it and left instead.

I think most forums have experienced a decline in activity since when they began. There's a lot more competition than there once was so I think it's to be expected.

I think a lot of people like an unmoderated format....so they can curse and say whatever they please. The other platforms offer that. Most on those platforms are only interested in what they themselves have to say.

I prefer a format like PT, where the same mores and norms are in place that would apply if we were speaking face to face.

Haven’t thought of it that way before but it makes sense.

I’ve made this analogy before so bear with me if you have heard it, but I think of PT as a friendly neighborhood bar were painters hang out. Admin owns it. The mods are the bouncers and the members are it’s patrons. Non-painters can come in and have a drink (or not) as long as they are content to listen. But once they start chiming in, or asking questions, they will be politely escorted to the DIY watering hole down the street.
Civility and a fair dose of respect are required - but occasionally disagreements break out and will be tolerated as long as behaviors don’t get out of hand.

I think chat rooms have played out like blogs have. They're still around but nobody cares. The political ones tend to be echo chambers for like-minded thinking people and that gets old after awhile. Less of a sanctuary and more of a ghetto. As Twitter grew that probably helped kill everything else. People told me that Twitter used to be people telling jokes and exchanging recipes and whatever goofy innocuous stuff folks had in mind. Now it's politics, swearing and even pourn. Everything runs it's course. I think that in a year or two the internet will be even more balkanized than cable TV due to pay walls. They're everywhere!

Unlike some of the most powerful and influential people on Earth, I've never Tweeted a chirp in my life, and plan on keeping it that way.

Pay wall....I have no clue, but just the sound of it is enough to keep me away....far, far away.

I also think it's generational. In other words, people over forty know how to communicate with a particular etiquette and interest in conversation. People under forty don't.

Also, I think many millennials have trouble processing the constant stream of stimulus social media offers. Humans in general haven't evolved enough to process information at the speed it is delivered. And this is extremely frustrating for many humans. But they can't disengage for fear of missing out.

I may be using it wrong but I mean when you click on a link for an article from a news site like the Washington Post or the Smallville PennySaver and they tell you that you've reached your limit of free articles and you have to pay to subscribe. With newspaper's circulation steadily dying, they're on the 'net trying to make a buck, whether it's Facebook or Twitter and advertising just isn't enough. How many papers can you subscribe to? Whatever they do with Net Neutrality, I think the corporations will consolidate the internet into tier pricing like cable. Paint Talk will probably be basic cable so we won't have to pay too much for it...

Well, I have run into that a lot, just being online. I thought a "pay wall" was specific to twitter. Here I knew what it was all along, just never knew the proper name. Thanks for letting me know.

I'm feeling kinda hip right now, may feel different tomorrow, IDK.

You need to get with the times and install a pay wall. PM me if you need further information on this new cutting edge technology.

1. If you want to get around paywalls, do your search in inicognito mode. I access Washpo like that all the time.

2. Where’d everyone go? I chased most of them off. Sorry.
