Thank you so much for your help on this. I did pursue free forums when I first was interested. I found a site not on the list you gave me. It's called Groupbox. I tried to navigate it and participate but got really burnt out on it. When it's free or cheap you get what you pay for. Ask expensive painters.
I've been a member of photography forums with the same format as PT but thought they were totally out of reach.
I've been working on an idea that I am certain I will pull the trigger someday, so I'm saving this to my folder for when I'm ready.

Thanks again.

Nothing the matter with a few unobtrusive ads. It's the overkill that causes us to kill them. The hand that feeds don't like being bitten.
Thanks for the tip arch. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

I don't begrudge them making money but 25% of my 17 inch screen is ads and they make everything load slower

As you all know, running a site costs money and advertisements pay for that. We don't want to overwhelm the community but are finding ways to balance the amount of ads and their placements. We are also working on finding the best fit for everyone involved. It’s not a perfect process and there will be discussion and disagreement with anything that is changed – that’s just human nature.

Thank you for understanding.

Thanks Cricket.

PT is reaping exactly as it sows.

Just keep the doors open and painters will show up.

Cricket,

I don't think anyone begrudges a site paying for itself, or even generating a healthy profit.

And I hope the owners can find a the right compromise of overhead, profits and service to the users that can make everyone satisfied.

Don't worry, we'll give feedback whether asked for or not

Yea, like Mark Zuckerberg cares about a profit to service ratio. LOL!

PT is an expensive site to run. I understand that moderator payroll is one of the biggest expenses.

Hang those HD banners high!

The Bentlys a thirsty vehicle to drive Scott. I need the big bucks from PT just to fill her up.

We should be paying PT to allow a bunch of painters to actually have a platform where we can perpetrate our innate qualities for universal knowledge and opinions, without serious consequences. Like ridicule, for example. Maybe a pay to play site would weed out the undesirables. Isn't that what advanced contracting is all about? Vetting and reaching the right fit?

Certainly, there is no other way this sort of invaluable discourse could occur.

Scott, would you and John do me a favor and carry some of this "discourse" over to the PZ.? Been trying to get something going over there, but Bill and Oden can't seem to stay in tune.

If we want this forum to stay healthy and vibrant, we need to spread the "discourse" over the whole yard.

We need some rain to wet down the "discourse". I keep stepping in it and tracking it into the house. The WW is NOT happy

Probably not.

Absolutely. And, before the intrusive and borderline dishonest bombardment of wall-to-wall ads, I made sure to click on one or two every day. Now every single one of them is blocked. If you want to make it a business analogy, every guy here sells his services. Then there are the pushy, shady salesmen that are in your face and argue relentlessly. Even though both have the same goal of earning business, one is just more classy than the other. Unfortunately, the sleazier path that PT has chosen probably earns more money, just like the pushy salesperson.

None of that business will be mine.

Good point Ken,

Allow me please to condense that: it's not WHAT you do, but HOW you do it.
