BM Impervo Alternative Oil Base? Sorry if this has been asked. I like Oil Impervo a lot but the price is putting it out of reach, what do you guys recommend?

Commercial wall covering for the npgg I was being nosey and wondering what day his demo was.I'm going for the trade show.I guess I should have gone to the pdca thread and asked. It's my first expo I'm all gitty!!!!
Congrats! It's a blast! We should all wear PaintTalk hats so we fellow PT'ers will recognize eachother. It sounds like a lot of guys here already know eachother, but I'll have a hard time spotting people based on their screen icons!

Advance is far preferable to SI IMO, especially if I had to live in the house where it was used! I stayed in a house that had the kitchen cabs done in SI, and it stank for 2 full weeks,(windows open) and a bit for another 10 days or so. Those days are over for me, using, or being around that kind of stink.

Try Ultraplate by California Paints. http://www.californiapaints.com/Fin...oducts/Interior-Paints/Ultraplate-Enamel.aspx It's a urethane modified acrylic so you get the easy clean up and durability. Levels like a sprayed on finish, great adhesion and doesn't yellow like oils do. Available in white and pastel base for light colors. If a darker color is needed try NexTech also by California. It's similar but a dual dispersion and int/ext. http://www.californiapaints.com/Fin...roducts/Interior-Products--Alkyd/NexTech.aspx

TJ-
Do you use the Ace stuff on high-end jobs or just everyday applications?

I love the PC lines from SW, but the prices are really starting to choke me out of my loyalty to them.

Pro Classic sticks like crazy after a week. Does the Ace line have good bonding properties, or is major sanding required to get good adhesion?

I haven't used it enough to assess whether I would use it on any high profile projects. I used it on stuff that was cleaned well and had been deglossed.

It is sticky stuff though, so It felt that it had pretty good adhesion.

Downsides are similar to BM advance. It's a bit runny and takes awhile to dry.

Pro classic oil on my current job. We should finish this one up tomorrow for now. I will make a job thread on this one. It looks fantastic, and the owner hasn't seen it yet. :)

A buddy of mine who does jobs I could only dream of getting primarily uses pro classic oil semi gloss. He says it touches up way better than SI when you have to touch up the sprayed finish with a brush or other. He also sprays on a coat with airless and FF tip, waits until its tacky, about 1/2 hour to hour, and shoots a full second coat on top. Looks so nice!

So true. Have tried sw proclassic, bm advance, and sw solo lately. We keep trying these products under different conditions but nothing gets close to that smooth brushability aspect of oil enamel. Advance comes in a distant second to oil. White over white it still takes two coats sometimes. Yeah yeah I know, we have tried other brushes. In fact we have tried 10 different brushes and still not quite like an oil. Have also tried extenders with lukewarm results. Keep trying sw, bm, ppg, azko noble. One of you guys will eventually get it right.

Use their dealer locator http://www.californiapaints.com/find-a-dealer.aspx If you do any jobs in the Stoneham area please look me up at Rounds Hardware.

FYI - ACE paints had always made their own stuff, some people thought a major label made it for them, mostly in vinyl acrylics. However, Valspar I heard is going to or has bought the plant. They seem to be gobbling things up to gain market share. They bought Cabot stain 8-ish years ago (which is why you see it on Lowe's shelves) and kinda killed the line if you ask me in terms of R&D. Which is too bad since they were a great local company here in MA. Personally I tell people to go with Storm System stains now.

Alot of BM retailers signed up for their Alliance program which made them take out anything that didn't have a Moores label. If you didn't sign up for the program you would miss out on certain benefits. Now I think BM made a good can of paint, don't get me wrong, but thats just scummy.

I was in your store in August I painted my Uncles house in Stoneham, unfortunately it's about a hour ride each way. I as looking for a filter for my Titian 700 and got some trim paint.

Ramsden Painting Thank you.

Csheils I have looked at every paint store close to me and not one carries it any more, if I drive 30-45 mins each way I now know where I can get it.

Im a firm believer in letting your brush or roller do the talking. Ya, oil flows out nicely. But who cares. As long as your consistant with your application. Whether it be brushed, rolled or sprayed you can get a darn good looking finish with any paint.
I for 1 dont even like the glassed off look. I find it makes all the imperfections stand out. I prefer the tiniest bit of nap for hiding power.
Not to mention. Someone down the road will have to repaint that stuff in latex when they finally remove oil from the shelves. Why not do us all a favour and just paint it in acrylic/ latex now and save a step down the road..?

When the customer is stuck on oil based products that is what I will use, I am not going to loose a job just because a customer wants oil and later down the road some one has to paint it again with latex. I know there are more options all I am looking for is an oil based finish paint cheaper $$ but as good as BM Impervo I thought it was a simple question.

It's all about markets. I have not been asked to use alkyd paint in more than 5 years. Its cool in an uninhabited house, but not one of my clients has really stuck to using oil. They ask about it, I tell them what I think and what I would use...(Muralo, probably, maybe Advance, I want to try the new California modified) and they go with that.
I'm sure there are those clients that want what they want, and that is oil. They can have it. To each his own!
