Found this email in my spam folder:

Quote:
Dear Sirs,

According to the copyrights laws, I am asking for permission to list your
business in my Free Contractor Directory and Advertising (no lead sale,
inquires come directly from prospects with no 3rd party involvement),
using some of the content and images from your website.

You will find your company's listing on my site right here:
http://contractortop.com/2011/06/23/rc-painting/

If you do not wish your listing to appear, please send me a message and
the listing will be removed immediately.

If you wish to take over your listing (editing content and images,
pausing and re-listing, connecting to your company's e-mail for
inquiries), please register at CotractorTop(.)com with your
company name, and the listing will be submitted to your user account
exclusevely.

Best regards

Ewa Beringer
ContractorTop(.)com
I went to my listing and sent an email as if I were a customer, no response.
I saw several members here listed, so you may want to do a search, as much as I hate to drive traffic to the site, it looks very shady to me!

I haven't seen anything spam like this yet, although I don't check that folder much.

What concerns do you have?

One, they have taken the content off my website and put it on theirs, although it does link back to me, and they "asked" for permission, albeit after the fact. This seems to be one of those sites that you get a free listing and can pay to upgrade. And I have heard horror stories from guys about Service Magic diverting contacts.
When I first posted it, I had not received any info on the inquiry I sent, it took about 30 minutes to arrive.

Maybe it is no biggie, I don't know? What do you think?

I'm just wondering how you could be affected negatively if you don't buy from them. If they put info from your website up and nothing else, I'm not sure in the harm. But maybe I'm just naive.

I did have a weird experience where I got a call from some online listing, asking to update my business info for their site. They said it was free. They had all my existing info, so I just said yes its correct. Well the following year I get a call, and they asked if I wanted to renew my listing. I didn't really care and was busy and said ok. Then they said, well ok, is this the correct billing address for invoicing? Then I was like, whoa, ok, later guys, no thanks.

Not sure, and it is ironic coming from someone who plasters her info all over!

It may end up being just another directory, so if it ranks, and someone is searching in my area and I am listed there, no harm.

Looks like a do-follow link to your website. There is no penalty for someone linking to you, so its a winner. The downside may be the inevitable email that follows down the line "to keep your listing click here and for only $19 month you will keep your premium status"

It was more the "19 a month" I was agreeing with.
The owner of that site is on CT and has quite a few good posts, so who knows?

We are having the same conversation elsewhere and the resident web guru added this,
Quote:
It's an interesting idea, direct contact from consumers, but copying and reposting your content is questionable as well as illegal. Asking permission after the fact won't cover them in any copyright infringement claims.

A better approach would be a contact before posting anything, asking you to add your free listing of have an offer to have it added for you.

The potential negatives I see:
They REPOST YOUR content, making the content on the internet duplicate and thus a potential for a negative ding from Google on your own website.
The link to your website does not benefit you for search engines as it's a nofollow link.
Winchester's listing has his email address in the clear, for spam bots to pick up. He has it the same on his website, but what if you do not, do they post it anyway?

Hi and thanks for the invitation, RCP

I will be glad to answer any questions, if the forum's administration allows me to.

As a general information: There are no tricks, hidden fees or any other catches in the idea.

Hi, Ewa, our rules here are the same over at Contractor Talk, and I have read your helpful posts there, and I think in this thread we can have the conversation to answer questions and see where it goes.

So is the site your creation?
My main concern is the fact that you take the content from out sites to post and then ask for permission.

Thanks.

Yes, the site is my creation. I have been working on it since september 2010 doing modifications and implementing better functionality, in the beginning as a classified ads site and under different domain.
I changed the idea to be only a Contractor directory and advertising for a few months ago.

I have requested an ad banner, still waiting for response.

About the content: Yes, i know I should have asked first and I know it does not benefit your sites having the same content.
I made some example ads to show the possibilities of using html, images, media and how a directory listing can be created keeping the company's personality. Because the idea of a dynamic and visual directory is new, I have made examples showing the possibilities, so you don't have to guess.

I have asked everyone for permition within 2-3 days after creating a listing. Only one company told me to remove the content, which I have done immediately, and some of the Contractors have taken over their listings.
As stated in the e-mail, say a word and it will be taken down immediately.

I am promoting your companies on my site and on fb.
Have also a targeted test ad running for consumers on fb.
Haven't started on the SEO yet as there is no point yet - will do that when the directory gets more companies.

The idea is to take over the listing and customize it the way you want to. Once the listing is submitted to you, you can edit it in any way you want.

The price: free means free, no more, no less.
If there at any point will be a payment involved, it will be when you can make your desission based on a long time results, no gambling.
Anyway there will never be paid leads, I am against it.

All images used on the site take directly to your listing on click.
Images used in the articles are purchased by me or they promote your company with description at the end of the article linked to your website, so it is more promoting for the company.

No-follow is in the script. The links are not meant to optimize your website's SEO, they are meant to let a customer go straight to your site on click.
Your SEO will be optimized anyway by the traffic on my site. The higher I will get in search enginees, the more often you will pop up in search results.
Anyway I do not want to hurt your websites' SEO, so if you would prefer, I can remove all content that is from your sites prompte, and leave only a dry and short information like it is done in the other directories, and make some demo listings instead, to show the variety of tools.

"I did get a response on my inquiry, it came through the contact form on my website and had my contact info."

It is because as long as I am the poster, all inquiries will naturally come to my e-mail address and I have to forward these manually to you, and since you do not provide any e-mail address on your site, I had to do it through your contact form. Once the listing submitted to a company, inquiries come to the e-mail address provided in User's profile.
I have tested it with one of the contractors - works.
