Default the economy

I have grown to hate that term. But it is a fact of life these past couple of years. I have questions to try and slow my over active mind and am just generally curious.
How are you doing? Are you seeing improvement in your closing/landing jobs? Is the phone ringing more? Are you working on the cheap out of fear? Maybe you are thriving.
I'll start by saying things are better for me. I made it through a slow year by preparing and saving every penny I made. I was getting jaded with people but realized they had concerns of their own. I am still losing jobs due to price but this is a new playing field.
Please chime in and thanks in advance.

I remember the Carter years, and I get alot of grief cause of it. I understand what our economy is doing and I know how to deal with it, simple cause I have been through it before. I see ALOT of improving in my closing new jobs, even as a lowballer, I have the tools, ins and experience to figure out what THIS economy is seeking and know how to deliver it. I don't work from fear, I work cause I love this stuff.

Unlike most pro's, I consider myself as "selling a service", I can give it to you both ways:
1) I can give it to you right
2) I can give it to you RIGHT NOW

BUT,,,,,,,You can't have it both ways

Yes it IS a new field, and them that survive it will be in EXACATLLY the posistion they want to be in, when the storm passes (depending on Nov), it may be too late, but as an Ole Goat, I can handle it whichever way it turns out

Peace

I don't like to use the term "the economy" either. These shifts have come and gone before and it will be all good again.

Invested money I really shoudn't have in advertising last year. It is paying off. Maybe it is a combination of that and the economy, but it is better.

Things are still very slow for me over here. The phone is ringing a lot more this spring than last, but closing deals and getting contracts signed is harder because I won't reduce my prices (though i'll try other tactics like changing the scope of work to suit budgets etc). But it's still pretty tough out there - i'm 0/6 on my last 6 estimates.

It's much better than last year though - I had periods of up to 2 months last year without a single phone call and sales were down to 15% of what I did in 2008.

Canadian or Toronto response here.
Nothing wrong with the economy for us.

We have never been so busy, never needed to hire so fast,
never had to turn down so much work.
Take a look what we had to do for our deck staining requests.
We may have to do that with all exterior requests soon.

I never had to use the economy as a reason or excuse so far,
but I understand how tough it must have been for contractors south of the border and in places like Michigan.

Consumer spending behavior is disfunctional now. The pendulum has swung to the other extreme from where it was when it was easy to be in this business. It will be a slow road back, and I dont believe it will ever be as whimsical as it was. I'm fine with that.

I have to agree with Scott on this topic. Just shows the importance to targeting a certain segment of the market and/or diversifying your available services.

Slingah,

I think here in Mass things are starting to become a little more "fluid" . Wasn't it about a month ago when the reports from the "experts" came out that the recession was over in Mass? Or maybe it's just spring fever, but all of a sudden many are busy. I'm about to unplug my phone.

Personaly, I have not even felt the recession. I'm booked until July, and am getting the prices I want. In all honesty, I have done better in the last couple of years than the years before.

We too are having a great start to the year. Last year was one of the best years that we have had. I am not sure why, but I am happy about it. We have not lowered any pricing and pre-qualify prospects better. George, we no longer do decks, not worth the time to invest. Glad to hear that most are still surviving.
Best to 2010! It is what you make of it!

Columbus is a mess as well. The demand for painting is there but there is plenty (too damn much) of supply.

If your still trying to be a REAL company...it maybe time to move ?

I have noticed a large number of "painting trolls" out in the town...trying to hustle a buck, for pennies on the dollar.
We have big "hoods"..with ALL Mexican decent living around here. Crime has risen ,to an all time high.... everyone is arguing over crappy work...

Thank GOD..."I'm retired"

Good luck

Newsflash: guys who are struggling are struggling in areas with lots of competition. guys who are succeeding are succeeding in areas with lots of competition. There is no promised land.
