I have been working in painting and sandblasting elevated water towers for 15 years. I know how to do the work and everything on the job, but when it comes to business management i have no idea how to get the jobs bid and estimate them, wondering if someone could help. First question is how do contractors get the jobs. i know they get them through inspection companies such as Dixon and TIC but in order to be in their list you have to be approved by them. so how do i become approved by the inspection companies and if i don't how else can i get the jobs
Turbow1111 new members that come to PT usually make an introduction about themselves to the group and are welcomed aboard. In your case you have pretty much introduced yourself and have explained the type & scope of work you intend on doing.
I'll be the 1st "Welcome to PT". If your a licensed PC the Certification you will need is a SSPC QP7 with your License and Certification you'll be able to get on the AVL "Approved Vendors List". I hope this answers some of your questions.
Maybe Mustang Mike can chime in and give a better picture of all it takes. Again "Welcome to PT"

@robladd I am new to the site I don't really know how it works. I don't know if you were being sarcastic or not. I couldn't really tell. You are right i have not introduced myself or any of that. Give me some time to get used to the site and learn how things work I am a fast learner. On another note the question i asked is serious and I could really use the help. I don't know where to start. What do i do first do i get the business name, get registered, gather the tools i need, find the job, get the insurances? I just need some guidance. I am very ambitious and hard working i just need some help in the right direction. If anyone wants to help i am willing to listen and learn and do whatever it takes.
Turbow 1111 having held a SSPC QP1 as an Officer in a Industrial Painting Company I wasn't being sarcastic at all. As you can see Mustang Mike Inspects Water Towers and he agrees it sounds about right.
certification@sspc.org will answer your questions. Start with a small industrial shop and grow into a larger industrial shop with a proven track record.
Sorry for the quick short answer, been really busy since I got back from vacation. Robladd is right. You need to look into the SSPC QP1 or QP7. You may also want to look over the SSPC QP1 audit check list. The list will cover everything needed to to keep your certification current such as tools, inspection reports and documents. I get an in the field audit every year and they will also do an office audit.
You will also be required to have a quality control supervisor or inspector certified by SSPC or NACE on the job. As of 2014, you have to have qualified craft workers ( coatings application specialist, level 2) on site for painting, blasting and immersion service work. Right now, you need one CAS to three non qualified workers 25%. In 2016, you will need two CAS to two non qualified workers on site 50%.
@mustangmike3789 Thank you so much for your reply. Here is the thing the company i work for right now is a heavyweight in the industry. They do blasting, painting, welding repairs, they have their own containment system and they run 6 to 7 crews all year round. For starters I want to start small. pressure wash the exterior/interior, power tool interior/exterior, spot blast to full blast the interior, paint, recoat. I know how to do the work and everything on the job. My main concern is getting jobs and actually biding on them two things that i lack experience. As for bidding and estimating jobs there are classes out there and i plan on taking them to get further knowledge on how to do it. I have so many questions because I'm very interested but i have no one to help. I can't ask my boss for help i highly doubt he will help and i don't want to make any mistakes. I am trying to build this up on my own from scratch so any advice from you guys is always helpful. I can always learn something new.
