Default I haven't had this before.

Yesterday a guy called me up and said he wanted to go with the bid I gave him a couple of months ago. He asked me if he could pay the deposit but extend out the payments for the next two months. Well I said that would be fine I would just rewrite the contract to reflect the change. OK, he was happy with that, and then he said we need to get started right away. I said I had four jobs in front of his, and it would be two weeks then I could start. Well,I heard some kind of grown or something and then (he hung up on me).
Well thinking the phone connection went bad so I called him back and left a message about asking him to call back if he would because of the bad connection. well, after a few mins I didn't get a phone call and I started to think about his last grown or whatever it was, so I called back and left a message something like, I maybe wrong, but I wondering if you actually hung up on me? Well, a few mins later called and left a message that he was sorry, he was just frustrated with me not being able to start right away. I didn't call back.

That's kind of whacked out.

Pro's are busy, what does he expect.

If I can start in 2 weeks, I'm not comfortable with where my business is, so a customer expecting sooner is absolutely unrealistic.

Plus having to extend the payments out and then HAVING to start immediately seems almost a recipe for disaster.

Good call on not calling back I say

Yeah, I guess I just have never had someone hang up on me. Kind of funny in a way because these people want a professional to do the work, but they don't care to even act a little grown up.

John,

You are a painter, not a loan institution.

Don't chase this one.

IMO

No, I would not even think of doing work for someone that has acted like this.I guess it's just good that it came out before we signed.

I had a guy call me and say I didn't have integrity cuz I did not think the work he wanted me to do would be very wise to do. Then the next day he called me while he was drunk and told me he was drunk yesterday and while he was leaving me this message. He apologized he didn't mean what he said, he was just had two many glasses of wine. So then he says he trusted me and then there were several weeks of back and forth phone tag and then one day when I called to schedule some work after they emailed me, and the lady said it was taken care of. Should have known weeks ahead of time, but it was the parents of a good customer. some people.

The most likely back story on this one: he's trying to sell the house, and is getting it painted to increase it's sales appeal. He's hoping he can sell it before you start chasing him for the balance.

The mentality of "I want it all and I want it now and you will pay for it for me" Makes me sick! What an A** Hat!! This guy sounds like a spoiled brat....DO NOT DO THIS PROJECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You will not get paid. Maybe installment painting with his installment payments. 1/3 payment=1/3 painting.Definetly money first with this clown

I could understand someone unfamiliar with how things in our biz work honestly (innocently) asking "do you have a payment plan or financing?" or "can you start right away?"
Truth is:
1) some do
2) sometimes (there are legitimate reasons that) they can

But the months old bid, the two Qs together, the reaction of the potential client....red flags are poppin' up like dandelions in my lawn

Run, Forrest...Run!
