Spent a few thousand out of pocket in 2013 developing and preparing brushed/textured softwood mock ups utilizing mordants, metallic components, and acids for coloring, not charging the client. The mock ups were for a project to commence in 2019. The architect & homeowner loved them, signing off on the finish 6 yrs prior. The architect liked the look so much that the technique/finish was implemented on a project in Cali, us being from the East Coast.

As the initial project for which the mock ups were originally produced for approached the finishing stages a few weeks back, I get an email from the construction PM asking me for the procedure and formulas, the builder having hired their own painters do it, not being able to replicate the look.

In response to the request I prepared a very thorough and detailed written procedure outlining all the steps including links to vendors where they could obtain product from. The only difference being I altered some of the ingredients .....Growler Brand Wolf Urine instead of ammonium hydroxide, Sun Leaves Jamaican Brand Bat Guano instead of phosphoric acid, and used 10-30 motor oil from Jiffy Lube instead of linseed oil along with links to Sun Leaves and Growler where they could purchase $h..t and p...s from.

The dumbfers forwarded the procedures to their painters without reading it. Their painters purchased the guano, urine, and used motor oil producing full size mock ups. I get a phone call from the painters telling me that the color and finish worked out beautifully but smelled really horrible....asking me if the smell would eventually dissipate....please don't try this one at home kids....

Sounds to me like they were trying to bait you into calling them back and knocking a little off your price. That's pretty much the only reason I can think of to tell you that the other company was the same price.

Actually I see it perhaps differently. I think they other guy was already on the hook for the job(personal friend, etc.) and got you to consult on colors and set the price for his friend.

That does sound like a viable possibility! In any case I have made note of him and will respond accordingly if he dares to call again!
