Anyone doing pizza huts. I have fancy looking spec in front of me that only list Ben Moore with no "or comparable". Anyone ever got a ppg or sw system. What did you have to do to get a alternative approved. Just bidding this for now, so I don't want to ask about switching.
We've bid some commercial work where no "comparables" were acceptable. A regional chain of tire stores here in the PNW only allows Rhodda Paint, for instance. That sort of thing is more the exception than the rule, but it's worth a phone call (with written confirmation to follow up). Paying a premium for the only acceptable product can take an unexpected bite out of the profit for a job...even more if you've got to pay shipping because there's no retail source anywhere close.
Lot,s of national chains have national accounts with vendors because they want all the products to be the same every where. Some have national account pricing which sometimes very good and better than most contractor pricing. Most of the time when they say no substitute they mean it. Auto Zone is one of them. If I can't get it easily I pass. On lots of commercial projects products by Tenemec will be spec'ed and they are hard to get where I live , so I pass. Plus their stuff is mostly epoxy so i don't want it anyway.
What you'll need to do is get PPG to colour match it with a draw down, and use there MSDS and sheen guide to match them with Benny Moores. After that it's usually approved, unless it's an inspected job (through MPDA, or MPI), or target (they only use paint from Minnesota)
There are a few reasons that the specs are usually strict: it reduces the unauthorized substitutions of products, it helps with maintenance painting, and the buildings are uniform in appearance. Most paint companies with national accounts like this provide a complete coatings schedule for the interior and exterior of the buildings, depending on the company.
I dont miss bidding these jobs. I do so a Gucci store 2 times a year. It is speced BM, they do nor want anything else. The people in the field or pm will tell sure to get a lower number, they may even let you use the material. But if the retail project management catches it, guess who is repainting in their specified product. Just make sure the gc or pm gives you something in writing.
