Lynn, I can't help but think that either you didn't have a written contract, didn't have it detailed enough, or didn't add the changes to the written contract. Way too much on the table for interpretation or misunderstanding.

Yeah Tonyg, I have talked about this job before. There was a written contract, except for the room and board aspect. Long time customer, she didn't make me pay room and board when she flew me to St. Thomas. No question it is a mess.

I will fix the hole only because I said I would, her mother shouldn't have to look at that just because of her daughter's problem with me.

You are way nicer than I would be Lynn. One way to turn me into an instant a--hole is to not pay me 100% of the pre-agreed amount in our contract. (unless i did something wrong or was negligent). The daughter is at fault for her mother looking at a hole in the wall, not you. I try to always do the right thing and keep my word but its still a contracted company/customer relationship.. this isn't a friend or relative and hope for future work with them kissed you bye-bye. Obviously, do what you feel you have to but I would walk away from the whole thing, not look back and not lose a wink of sleep. Let the mother goad her daughter into paying if she isn't happy with a damaged wall.

Have you had any sort of conversation regarding when you can expect to be paid? I'd explain the situation, saying that you don't normally take on new work until the past due balance is paid. Sometimes a simple phone call is all it takes.

Yes, through e-mail. The daughter's husband lost his job, and she basically told me they are flat broke and I was the "first on her list".

I was hoping that by doing what I said I would do it might pressure her to do as she said she would.

I think I will call her, no e-mail.

I swear you are not going to believe this. Got on the phone, tell her I'm coming up, she says she just sent me a check yesterday. No trace of the anger from before. I know, wait till the check comes, but I don't think she would lie about that.

Relief, and I am happy I didn't lose her as a customer.

I have been following your post with interest, and am glad to hear this good news for you. By the way, in my mind I have always thought that you would win this one. Anybody that gets flown in to do work for another is, by definition, damn good at what they do.
