Default tattoos, piercings, long hair,

Whats your policy on tattoos, piercings, long hair?
I'm clean cut, no tattoos, no piercings, and I don't like them on my job site.
IMO, they creep out the customers. I want my workers to look proper, not all unkempt. no pony tails, man buns, lip rings, tattoos, ear gauges, sagging pants, flat bills, poor hygiene or other counter culture type stuff.

Oh, so I guess that means you wouldn't hire most women? Seeing as they may have pierced earrings and might put their hair in a ponytail or bun!

So, you want cheap labor, that waters their paint down, cleans their brushes in the kitchen sink and stands on furniture, but clean cut? Get a grip, dude. You obviously run a hack company, so why would you care?

I need my guys to look PROFESSIONAL. You can still look/be professional with all of those things. As long as they wear whites, and dont look like they are out of prison, it doesnt matter.

When I bid a job, I show up with a nice long sleeve dress shirt covering my tattoos. When I have the job, Im in my whites with short sleeves, tattoos showing.

Non-smokers only. I've found that cigarette smokers smell. Ladies of the house have told me their interior painters selection has a lot to do with their hygiene/appearance, and smokers smell like ashtrays. they dont even realize it. The cigarette smokers will keep you at a disadvantage.

Ya, you're better off hiring weed smokers as you and the lady of the house may get a contact high as a bonus!

Myself and my crew are fully tattooed, including facial tattoos and piercings. I think we stand out from the run of the mill “clean cut” painters out there. You have to be different these days.

I smoke and I'm tryin' hard to grow a ZZTOP beard. Last week I was blasting Lynyrd Skynyrd down by the lake while doing an exterior. Clean cut is boring. I gotta be me.

Us artsy fartsy types can get away with tats and dreds, etc.

Our clients appreciate that it’s part of our persona, which is great!

On those days I feel like wearing my daisy dukes, sports bra and flip flops, I don’t worry if my tats or piercing show.

I went to a doctor office the other day and was filling out some new forms. It came down to the part that was "optional" and asked what sex or whatever. Used to be male or female. The options to select were a list a paragraph long. Things change. Everyone is tatted up around here.
My wife is GM at WENDY's 25 years they are finally allowing some tats and the 20 year old dudes to have their 50 year old beards. Within reason of course.

Who uses the term counter culture anymore?

Professional doesn't necessarily mean conservative. I agree with you about smokers, but if they do good work and don't take a 15min smoke break every 30 minutes then I'd look the other way.

Some of the best tradesman of all disciplines don't always appear to look the best. Or their vehicle may not look the best.

Yes I'm aware image carries a lot of weight with some clients. I feel the personal interaction during an estimate carries more. All of which weighs less than good positive, enthusiastic word of mouth.

Me personally am turned off if I have to hire an HVAC or plumber for myself and they roll up with a brand new vehicle all vinyl wrapped with big flashy advertising.

I want the guy who is recommended from word of mouth, who shows up in an unassuming vehicle with just some simple signage that is somewhere between hooptie and fresh off the dealer lot who impresses me with a professional polite manner and their knowledge. I don't like to be treated like an idiot and "sold to" like a car dealer would.

I like to get details about the job from them vs generic descriptions like "check and service heater" or "inspect air conditioning condenser". Give me more meat and potatoes than that so if I am shopping around I have something to compare.

Working in the trades I believe gives you a better ability to read other tradesman so I may be off base but I find it easier as years go on to kind of just feel when someone is good at their craft or not even if I haven't seen their work. Lots of bull****ters who can't deliver.

I don't care if they have tattoos, earrings, service animal, whatever. Id rather have a ratty looking Craftsman doing work than a clean looking hack.

This thread makes me laugh...

I am on the younger side at 30 years old. Most of the younger people that have worked for me, work for other people I know, or I have meet on job site are all more conservative looking than the older people. Usually when I see some one with tattoos on their fore arms, hands, long hair, beards, ect, it is some one much older than me

I have had people with neck tattoos, long hair, cigarette smokers work for me. some of the best people have had some of these traits. Some of the worst people were the most clean cut looking. You can be professional, and presentable while being yourself.

limiting your employee base because of some tattoo or longer hair, seems like bad business decision.

I'm drawing a line I the sand at service animals. "No, Bob,you cant bring your service animal/pet parakeet to work."
And get that damn cigarette away from the house. If you need a smoke go sit in your car. Not on site next to non smokers and open windows. And NOT at the top of a ladder.

One of my only rules for immediate termination is throwing cigarette butts on the ground. That p!sses me off enough as it is, but on a clients property?? YOU'RE OUTTA HERE!

Agreed. I had an electrician ask me where to put his cigarette butt last week. I told him he could put it in his pocket or eat the damn thing, just don't drop it. Can't believe people can't figure this out themselves. Show some class. I guess one good thing was that he had the sense to ask the question.
