Default your worst employer

does it annoy you when you work for a guy you're smarter than?

the last guy i worked for was a complete imbecile, no knowlege whatsoever of his trade. he was a racist, a bigot, completely covered in tattoos, and his wife was called tracy.

who's your worst boss?

paul.

My worst boss has been me. I find myself hard to work for at times. I have very high, often impossible expectations. I am working on that relationship. Its getting better.

one of the first times i was in alkyd, painting a porch in green. i already told the boss man not to buy american tradition, but he goes for it so i make do. i guess i was taking to long and we had another job to get to so he tells me "what i do when im painting a flat surface like that is just pour the paint on and pull it out with the brush" i told him i didnt like doing it that way but they insisted so when i poured, i poured like a quart out and he got pissed. he starts calling me a dumba$$ and all so i told him im not an experienced slop artist and started ranting about "this is how freakin crackheads paint". i still have my job

OP, I'm sure that my employees think the same of me, I have men on my staff that were painting before i was born, but always remember who signs the checks. And don't forget there is a lot more to painting than painting, some of which you might be surprised to find that your boss is much smarter than you at. As far as racism and biggotry, well there is no room for that, but its sounds as if you have a little prejudice describing him the way you did. I mean what exactly does" his wife is called tracy" mean?

"I'll tell ya what kid ... we are going in to talk to this client about collecting a check, and she's not happy. I'm going to fire you in front of her. You go outside and get back in the car. I know you didn't even paint here, but just do it!"

That was a fun day!

you know, it's funny because one of the reasons I really decided to pursue the painting market was looking from the outside in, I percieved painters to be, just as you said, dumb and not very business savvy. Also there is no definate "big Guy" in the market. BUT after meeting people both on this site and in my local area, I have found that not only was I wrong about the majority painters being "dumb", but many are quite brilliant in how they have set up there operation, understand there product, market their business and deal with customers. Basically explaining why there isn't a "big guy" because the little guys are doing too good of a job for a major company to come in and gain large market share. With all that being said, there are some real morons in the world, and some of them do happen to paint. there are always exceptions to the rule.

Scott beat me to it. By far I have been the worst boss I've ever worked for. That however, has gotten much better as I've matured. I used to be very impatient and wanted everything done yesterday. Now I give myself more reasonable deadlines and find that I'm a better employee as well as boss.

I am the second-worst boss I've ever worked for for all the same reasons as Scott and Brian describe.

The worst I've ever worked for is the same person I described as a great mentor in another thread. I made sure to describe him as a great mentor on the "technical side of the business." Other than that, wow!

He fired me at least twice and I quit at least twice. Everytime it was when he'd completely fly off the handle, and start yelling, cursing, screaming like a maniac. I don't care who you are, boss, friend, enemy, family member, whatever: Once you get irrational, you've lost me. I won't listen to it . . . It was a pretty funny situation, looking back.
