Default Aloha from Hawaii!

Howdy, I'm Steve and I'm a General Building contractor in Honolulu. I have about 30 years experience in building and remodeling, but lately I've been doing finish work exclusively, and with the downturn I do most of the work myself. I'm not a great painter, and I think my ideas are outdated. Like, "You have to use a latex primer and a latex topcoat." That's clearly been given the gong, and I'm now aware I can use an alkyd primer and coat it with latex semigloss.
Which... I've been doing, and wondering why I'm doing it! I know oil primer is supposed to work better on bare soft wood such as poplar, but I still get the same brush strokes and have to sand them smooth before topcoating... or do I? That's what I do, oil or latex primer. I put two thick coats on and then sand it smooth, then usually spray something like Sherwin Williams Pro Classic Latex, two coats, and that's it. I paint everything before installing, baseboards, casings, etc. I also completely assemble the door and window casings with a Festool domino joiner, so the 45 corners all are flush and when painted, most of the time you can't even see them. Then I use a Grex headless pin nailer to nail them to the casing and let the adhesive behind hold them to the wall. Actually, the pin nails will hold, but I use adhesive to be on the safe side.
Anyway, I paint everything first, so I need to get a better system. I think I'm going back to Sherwin Williams latex primer and then the ProClassic. I just don't see all the raised grain everyone talks about.

Any thoughts?

Steve

Welcome Steve. I'd like to go on record as saying that if you stick around there will come a point when that screen name works against you.
