Default Hello

Hello everyone. Just signed up and thought I should say something about myself.

I started off painting cars for a few years and doing collision work. About 5 years ago I started in the exhibit and display field. I work for companies around Detroit painting displays from auto shows and museums. Work is getting slower in that field so in my down time between jobs I have been doing more and more work for myself. Eventually I will probably end up mostly self employed.

Hope to make some friends and learn some valuable info here.

Welcome to PT!

Im in New York, But my wife's family all live in the Detroit area.
Some of the area's are in bad shape, like a war zone. Every time we go to visit, I almost expect to see the National Gaurd stationed on the corners.

Good Luck with that economy.

Haha, yea its rough downtown. I'm going to take some pictures next time I go down there of this street that is abandoned houses as far as you can see and a sign that reads something like "Enter at your own risk, city police does not patrol this area." Seems unreal, I know what you mean about the national guard lol.

I was going to say that.

The freakiest thing I saw (and this was outside the city) was an entire street of forclosures waiting to be demolished.

But maybe this will give you some hope.

My brother in-law got laid off back in 07' or 08' from a pretty nice corperate job. So after spending about year looking for work, he decided to do the only other thing he new how to do, and opened a Auto Detailing business. His theory was that the people who could afford to have their cars detailed could stiil afford it in this economy and he is now actually close to reaching his maximum volume and considering opening a second location.

I imagine the same is true for painting.

Good luck out there.
