Default Hello

Was doing some research and ran across this site via google and contractors talk. Im probably not nearly as experienced as most of the people here, but hope to learn a lot as I work on my painting business.

I've been painting off and on for a guy for around 5 years now, mostly apartment contracts, along with some houses here and there.

I am really ready to leave and start to venture on my own in the contracting business. (which is what led me here)

I am confident that I can handle any apartment contracts, as thats what I am used to, but to any of you that are experienced probably know that it's not exactly the same as painting a high quality job commercial or residential. This is pretty much what scares me when trying to venture out on my own.

And since I am here, I guess i'll start with my first set of questions.

I am going to day to get some quotes on insurance (1 mil) and workman's comp. Is it necessary to file for a actual business license or LLC ect? Right now I dont have any contracts set up or anything as obviously I want to be fully protected before bidding any jobs.

Also, I live in Indianapolis. Any suggestions, or tips out there for finding some small residential or apartment type jobs other than just basic advertising (signs along the roadways, yellow pages) and just randomly dropping off bids.

I'll probably go next week to get some business cards made up, along with some folders to put together a few bid proposals for dropping off to local Apartment's .

Another problem without any experience (working for myself) or photos to actually show. Will this hinder in closing the job? Obviously I will get a letterhead or some form of proof of my 5 year experience at my current employer. (Which was just us two) He normally worked alone until I came along.

Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

Nice forum btw

Welcome. I've been away for a bit myself. Lots of Canadians here these days...not that there's anything wrong with that.

You'll have to check Indiana laws regarding licensing.
