Default Hello from Chattanooga

Good evening to you all

I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. I am new to the painting world, but have been lurking here since April. I have learned a tremendous amount by reading many of the great threads. I figured it was high time for me to stop lurking and start talking.

First, I am not a painter and have never painted for a living. I am an entrepreneur and found a great opportunity in a decent sized company in Chattanooga, TN. I bought Painter Ready from a guy who did a great job of branding the company in our area. He ran it well, but was ready to move on. My brother and I bought the company in May and things have gone incredibly well. I have an MBA and am a CPA and we have owned businesses for over 10 years, so the business side is nothing new, but the painting side certainly has been a learning experience.

We have 16 painters, many of whom have been with the company since it's early years (started in 2007) and they have taught me much. We also have a full time estimator who is a painter by trade and we a full time office and operations manager, who I brought with me.

We advertise heavily on the radio and get a great response. We also have a strong referral and repeat business network that accounts for close to 50% of our business. We have several wrapped vehicles, but I would like to have more on the road. We use yard signs and surveys after every job.

I say all of that, not to brag since I have simply grabbed a burning torch, but to provide some background on my initial and future posts.

My interest is in growing the business to at least double the current size. My plan is primarily to stay the course with the exception of expanding our commercial and industrial business. We currently do about 80% residential repaints, 15% commercial repaints, 4% industrial repaints and 1% new residential. I would like to push commercial and industrial to about 40% of our total business over the next 18 months without reducing the volume if residential repaints.

I have read most of the stickies and I read the top 5-10 current posts most days. My focus right now is the winter. I am uncertain at best. The company has historically done pretty well do to our marketing mix, but it is a huge unknown. My interest is in retaining the crew to the extent practical.

I appreciate all the time you all take to give advice. This is a great forum with a tremendous amount of experience to give.

I look forward to getting to know you all and to working with you over the years.

Thanks and have a great night!
Ken

Welcome to PT.
Seems to me that we can use your help more than you can use ours. I really hope to see in the threads

Welcome to the group. You should be able to offer up some different perspectives.

Welcome Ken. You've come to the right place. I've been painting for over 25 years and still learn from these guys.
