Lightbulb Hello from Chicago

I'm New here and I'm glad to be a part of a collective group of experienced people. It is great to have a place to share information with other similar people, some even competitors, but on a common ground to help everyone.

I have recently transitioned out of running a basement finishing business after 12 years and into running a residential painting business. Residential painting is where my roots in construction are at though.

I'm always interested in the market conditions in different areas and marketing methods, "No Give Away On Secrets Though", of what works and doesn't work. Let's face it, even with providing expert services as I did with 90% of all my basement work being from referrals, the painting industry thrives on a successful and adjustable marketing methods to keep the customers and the cash flow flowing.

I have noticed that the painting business, job life cycle of a few days to a week is so much shorter than 10 weeks on average for basements. This presents a different challange on customer relationships (referrals). With less time on a job you have to really listen and be on your toes to impress your customers. Just my thoughts! Thanks for reading and I'm glad to offer any information I may have also.

Thoughts as I push forward in the painting business,

Welcome from the NW side of the city!

I'm thinking that basement business might not be so bad right now.

Hi GPInc,
I'm new here myself, interesting point on the job life cycle.

I do quite a bit of wallpapering where a typical job is one day and it's amazing how much of an impression you can make in one day. Of course its the lead up phone call arranging a viewing and the courtesy call the morning of the job or the night before then the follow up call the next day 'How did the paper dry out?' etc. That's not including the frendly chat with a cup of tea when doing the job, as you can see there's lots of points of contact even on a one day job.
I never fail to get referrals from all my jobs no matter how small.

Cheers
Andrew
