Hello Everyone,

I recently registered with painttalk and have really enjoyed reading through many of the threads here.

I have a slightly different perspective on paints and coatings than most of you here. I am a formulating chemist who worked for one of the larger paint manufacturers in the U.S. for over 12 years. During my time there, I developed, maintained, tested and compared numerous types of regional and national brand paints, including interior primers and topcoats, exterior primers and topcoats, DTM enamels, elastomerics, oil-based paints, waterborne epoxies and stains. Unfortunately, my former employer closed down its local facility along with its lab, and I found myself temporarily out of work.

Thankfully, there is another, much smaller company in town that makes several types of non-architectural paints. They want to move into the commercial/retail market in my state, and have brought me on to develop that business for them. Unfortunately, while I have tons of experience working with salesmen, store managers, raw materials suppliers, and other technical people, I have precious little experience working directly with folks like you, who actually make a living using the products we provide. I've always felt that the more interaction a company's R&D has with its customers, the better the product is they can produce. This is something I believe has been lost as many of the local and regional paint companies have been gobbled up by national or international giants.

Anyhow, I greatly appreciate the chance to learn from you and see how paint is used in 'real life'. I would certainly welcome any thoughts you might have regarding what you see as the greatest challenges you are facing today, what types of concerns you have, and any advice you might think worthwhile for what is essentially a start-up paint manufacturer. I would also be more than happy to comment on any technical questions you might have regarding paint.

Thanks again and I look forward to future discussions!

Welcome to the forum! It will be nice having someone else around here who can answer chemistry related questions pertaining to paint and primer. When the time comes for R&D on new products, you will definitely find people here willing to try new products, myself included!
