Saw some chat on this site regarding soda blasting and decided to join up. Here's my company web site- http://www.garnetsales.com

I've attended a few NACE and SSPC shows and am learning from end users like those on this forum.

Glad to have you on the forum! I've used garnet as an abrasive and it works great compared to sand, it's hard, produces very little dust (read, you can see what the hell you're doing) and can be reused 2-3 times.

Garnet gets pretty dusty too especially when you recycle it but still a great media for many types of substrates.steel grit is much better for visabilty but limited to certain substrates and expensive stainless steel grit is great as well but very expensive.

I mostly use the SSPC-AB Type 2 abrasive in the form of slag (Kleen Blast). It can't be recycled like Type 1 Garnet, but has less silica and can still produce a 2 mil profile on steel.

Last sub sea job we did NDT on structural
steel. After sub sea abrasive blasting by commercial diver's they did magna flux to check for cracks.

Nothing like inspection work, this is a couple pic's of our blast equipment and abrasive.

You may ask why IR 750's, to blast at 4+ atmospheres it takes extra CFM to blast subsea. 2 compressors for redundancy.

The work was performed offshore platforms.

Rob,

Do the divers also apply a coating on the exposed substrate at sub sea after the test blast, or do they wait for dry dock? I've heard of some coatings that can be applied under water.

Sounds like fun.
I wonder how a 36k + psi uhpw would work in that environment.

Not on this inspection job, NDT and magna flux. Checking for structural integrity of the platform and components.

We use Cavidyne blaster first to clean the inspected area. Then abrasive blast to give the profile for magna flux.

It's a 3 step process, the magna flux is electro static and the flux will fill in any hairline cracks

We will disconnect and bring parts to the service prep and paint with 3M Scotch Kote 323i pipeline coating and reinstall.
