Cool Independent Retailer

I have been following Paint Talk for over a year, and find all the info very helpful. My husband and I are a Mom & Pop independent retailer for the past 15 years, and things have certainly changed over the years. We have been solely a Ben Moore dealer, but brought in Pratt & Lambert last year to have a second supplier. It's been good, but considering branching out further w/Akzo-Nobel, and highlighting the Ralph Lauren line. We are in a high-end area, and feel that people still like "brands". We can't compete against THD & SW, so why even try.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Thanks for the warm reception! We truly love what we do, and always try to set ourselves apart from the company-owned and big box. Unfortunately we have seen a lot of dealers go out the past couple of years.
Any feedback on the Ralph Lauren line?

Welcome to the forum. We have had several discussions here on the merits of dealing with smaller stores, many of us appreciate the service you provide.
On the Ralph Lauren, I have used a few "faux" products and like them. Many feel they are not for the pros, there are better quality products for the serious Faux group. But for the average painter, offering some of the finishes can be a great upsell. My local paint store did a demo day using the candlelight, leather and denim finishes that was pretty good.

It is just like a topcoat, but it adds some depth and a shimmer that looks really nice. Great for a wall that has sconces.

Welcome mom&pop
I started out using a mom&pop store here in Denver a long time ago.
I still use them for my Ben Moore, but they're not a mom&pop anymore.

Welcome to Paint Talk... I have used RL leather in the past I would have to say it's not very user friendly kinda pricey over rated...It did look like leather though.

Not a big fan of the Ralph Lauren line. Like Chris says some of the decorative products are ok, but from what I remember(it's been a while) the paint product line is not that great. Might be ok to push to homeowners, but I don't know a lot of pros in this area that use it. The store where I buy took in the line years ago and it did not go over well. Eventually it ended up out the back door.

Same here too with independent dealers. It's a shame.
