Default Introduction of the blastman

Hello, my name is Geno Gates. This is the very 1st forum that I have ever joined. I have been in the paint business in some fashion for the past 24 years. For the 1st 8 years I sold paint for the Dunn Edwards Paint Corporation, working my way up from an entry level driver delivery wipping boy (which took 1 year), then to the paint sales floor for 5 years, then finally outside sales for 2 years. Then I moved to southern Oregon and went to work for the ICI paint company as an outside sales representative that lasted about 2 years when I knew that I had to try going into business for myself. I started Southern Oregon Sodablast in 1995, not knowing anything about the blasting business at the time and I'll tell you that it just about kicked my ass. I went from taking painting contractors out for lunch and a round of golf, to going home with soda bicarbonate in every crack and crevis of my aching body. As time passed (14 years) I slowly diversified into an industrial specialty blasting and coatings contractor. I primarily do work on the west coat. I have shot almost every type of blasting media that exists and have applied everything from architectural paints to plural component epoxies and urethanes. I have never had an employee. I have started to write some of the different things that I have learned over the years at www.thepaintpro.com I hope to be able to help others out that are just starting to get into the paint and blasting trade.

Welcome aboard blastman. As a fellow blaster and industrial painter, I'm sure I'll have a question or two. Good information on your web site.

Miss Baily looks AWSOME, I love nothing more in the world than my Golden best friend. I worked for the Ventura California Store Dunn Edwards. My 1st outside sales territory was Santa Barbara / SanLuis Obispo Counties. Then the company transfered me to the Ventura - Oxnard - Thousand Oaks areas in which I became heavily involved with the property management companies. Dunn Edwards was a quality company to start the paint career at.

I did a ton a work in the Oxnard area, but we used Vista Paint. We probably know a lot of the same peps. But I have to disagree with you about the quality. Vista paint carefree product line is just as goo as there permasheen DE is over rated if you ask me. They have cool shirts and you allways know who's using dunns by the orange tape.

It has been about 16 years since I worked for Dunn Edwards. I do get sent the cool t-shirts from time to time but was unaware of the orange tape. Vista did not even exist in the area when I was a sales rep. my competition at the time was Ameritone, Decratrend, Sinclaire and Frazee. I also think that Vista makes a quality can of paint. I am sure that some of Dunn Edwards products are over rated but as a company as a whole they are tough to beat.

MAN those are some old school names, Sinclaire put out some great paint to until ICI bought them out. ICI really fu*ked up some good paint. But I still disagree with you, DE burned their bridge with me long ago. But my experinces and yours may very. I am a consumer and you were a dealer. Arnt they emloyee owned now, I think in your day they were not.

You are right, when I was there DE was not employee owned, it was still family owned by the Edwards. Jimmy Edwards ran operations while Kenny Edwards was overhead of R & D and the lab. I think of the 10 years of being in the paint sales field as my years in college. The different contacts that I had aquired and the knowledge that I gained made going into business for myself quite a bit easier.
