Default Painting Pride In Progress!

I am a 4ThGeneration Reading Painting Contractor that hopes to bring the years of experience I have gained through the custom re-paint service side of the business. I feel that this board as others like it can be used to not only bridge the gap that most painters are not willing to do normally within their local service area, but to educate what true professionalism and benefits can be gained by hiring a pro from the painting field instead of wasting time and money trying to deal with all the variables that painting offers.

If anyone on this board wishes to exchange ideas on how to improve each others marketing, bidding, Human Resources, forms or whatever you feel your company offers at the highest level, please contact me as I am here to do the same.

I think we have all the same asperations and have been discussing these ideals for many a moon. It sounds like if took a stroll through the archives you could see which paths we've been down and which gaps we've bridged and exactly how your desire to pass on your knowledge can mesh with the education between professionalism and wasting time we've already explored and then you will know exactly what level of professionalism most here are at and how you can add to it.

Default 4th generation painters.

I have only known a couple 3rd generation painters, and they REALLY understood efficiency, tool/product selection, and essentially every possible approach to painting that makes painting enjoyable, hassle-free, and profitable.

I have never heard of a 4th generation painter.

I am already impressed by the 3rd generation painters I have met. I can't imagine what insights a 4th generation painter might have.

Welcome Jimmy.

I do believe that four generations ago they used horses a lot - Not only for transportation, but also their hair to make brushes. All the paints were natural(mostly linseed and laq oil). I think lead came into paints mostly in the generation after them. And they never had rollers or spray guns.

Default The good old days or was it daze? Everything was a blur!

Thanks ya'll for the warm welcome.

As you see from the time I am on here, Monday is upon us and if I do not tie things together while the kids are asleep, nothing will be done correctly .

I think back in 1901 or 02 is when my Great Grandpa started the business. My Grandpa just passed over 2 years ago. He also was a master painter. He sure had some stories.

He was buying the paint when they still had to add their own colorants. SW is who you can blame for the prices to start to fall like they did. When they came with the standard prepackaged colors, people did not have to rely on a painter to mix their paint and felt they were no longer at their mercy.

Papa said they used to brush walls out with the 12 inchers and as far as caulk, they had to pack it into the huge caulk guns. there were no tips to cut. They came with Pre-formed tips on the gun itself.

Spray jockeys would be out of work back then lol. He fought the idea of a spray gun up until I took over as foreman and I devised a way to still produce a dynamite product that saved tons of time.

I wish there were more professionals such as yourself in the area Jimmy. Then I wouldn't have to explain to clients why some guy in a pickup truck is quoting half of what I do. Welcome!

I had some people try to beat me down on price on decks and a exterior deck repaint. I gave them a price for a 500SF deck for like $1750 which was not bad for the work involved. They said"We are going to tear the deck down next year so we want a lower price" Yeah right lol. I quoted them a low price along with all the proper Behr coatings technology(The $50 per 5 stuff) They said they wanted quality. I said for a deck your "Gonna" demo down next year? "well we may keep it 2 years" Then you want a 2 year warranty? "why yes" she said. O.K. $1750 and left without giving them the estimate. They wanted the quote and I said"Why, so your handy men can have a site map to go by? I do not go there. Have them get some liability ins first.

May not get their referrals, but who cares. They do not appreciate quality and they will not get it.

Only signed contracts get the estimate these days!!!
