I am a new member trying to get used to this format so work with me if I am posting to the wrong forum. I own and operate an industrial coatings company. This company has been my life. The first five years were terrible. Then I decided that If I was going to work 80-100 hrs a week I was going to be paid at least 100$ an hour for it. I stuck to that. I cant keep up anymore. I have been incorporated for ten years. I would like to hear if anyone else has the same story

I don't think we use that feature much on this site.

Do you have a business with employee structure? Subs?

Have you read or listened to "The E-Myth" and/or "The E-Myth Contractor" by Michael Gerber?

Do you belong to any associations/groups, on a local level, affiliated with business or painting?

I'm not industrial, I'm in residential repaints and have had a taste of the "burned out virus" in my career.

Sounds like you've come down with a case of it!

Welcome aboard 2414,

Sounds to me like setting a goal and working to that end has worked out for you. Most of us are pleased with the Emyth books and you would do well to read them.

...probably not best to expect the forum thread to function as a chat mode...

Ken S

I used to be a member of the SSPC. The only benefits that were of any real value was a discount on contractor registration for the SSPC conference. I can get all the information I need to know about surface prep, paint, and specs on their web site for free. They sponsor a great site called paintsquare.com. The also put out the Journal of Protective Coating and Linnings, this is a first class magazine. The Journal of Architectural Coatings I think is also part of this group, They send me the magazine for free. I have never heard of E-myth or E-myth contractor, let me know where this is on the web and I look it up. I have has alot of guys mention this. Im not burned out I am very proud of what I do, not alot of people will sandblast any more its a tough job but it has paid for my bills and I have enough left over to live a great lifestyle. I answered your question in reverse because your first question about employee structure and subs is going to take a whole page.

I'm assuming you also paint, along with the blasting segment?. Have you gone to SSPC/PDCA convention/tradeshow(they joined up about 3 years ago and now called PACE2008) and attended the classes for certification? One's coming up at end of Jan. (www.pace2008.com)

I belong to PDCA here in Fla. and we have several members that are industrial contractors who also "blast". They also mingle with residential & commercial painting contractors.

www.e-myth.com is Michael Gerber's website. You can order his CD's, books, tapes, etc. Or run over to Books A Million and get the book.

My question is, will or would our businesses survive if we, as the main field(in the bucket) person were to get sick, injured, etc; and sidelined for a long period of time?

I know where your coming from when you mention the subs&employees arena taking a whole page. lol

Ken S,
I do paint I use a graco 7900 for most of the stuff I spray. My brother and I have been looking into traveling to the warmer states for winter work. I work mostly with agriculture. Currently in the mid-west there is a huge boom in fertalizer. The south is where some of the biggest of these companies are. I know where I can go to work but the biggest thing is local support. Where do I get abrasive what are the rules where do you stay? These may sound like stupid questions but when your going to send two semis and three trucks a couple of hundred miles down the road, after an already profitable year, why take the risk? Back to your question, got on the stump and I could not get off. I have been to the SSPC convention. It was in 2000 in Tennesee. I was of the most fun things I have done in my career. Carboline and Sherwin Williams threw unbelievable parties. The educational classes were led by real company owners. I could hardly understand why millionares who own huge companies with two hundred to a thousand employees would stand up and share their secrets with a county bumkin. I was thinking of going to PACE this year have not been to one in 7 years. I sandblast and paint because I own my company. If it was not for the guys who apply the paint to protect a surface from weathering, U.V. attack, salt, chemical and every other thing that attacks what needs to be coated, I would be screwed. Thank for the web link to e-myth.

Hey Panderson...

I'm an SSPC/NACE guy too... We might even know each other... uhhh ohhh...

We're in the heavy duty industrial market... Fertillizer... Chemical Storage Tanks... Wastewater... Power Industry/Nuclear... Animal Containment... Food Processing... etc...

What is the name of your company? I'd like to talk to you offline... I think you may have applied some of my coatings that were labeled under another comapany's name...

Default If my wife saw that!!!!

Wolverine,
The only way I would know you is if your from the upper Mid-West. I make it a point to know everyone that I bid against. I think you may be a guy who is very smart and for the first time on this site, I am going to be quiet. If you want to talk to me off-line. You are going to have to dig a bit. That is how I found this site, and most of the projects I work on. I don't think that it will be too much trouble. I think you want to sell me something.
