I wish I could say that I always knew I would be successful, but the truth is, I never thought I would be alive at age 39, much less, successful. Like many painters I got involved in doing drugs and living a lifestyle that was very destructive.

I was born and raised in Wallace, NC in a Christian home along with my two siblings by two very loving and giving parents. I was a straight A student all through school until my senior year when I began to hang out with the wrong kind of people. I had wanted to join the Navy and see the world, but my new drug habit prohibited me from doing so. Shortly after high school, I left home and so began the addiction that controlled my life for many years.

By the time I turned 30, I was tired of disappointing the people that cared for me. I was tired of the life that I was living. I was tired of being in trouble with the law. Mostly, I was just tired. I decided that I wanted more out of my life and that I had a lot to prove if I ever wanted to gain the respect of the people in my family and in my hometown.

I had always worked a physical job, despite my habit. I had worked for painters throughout the years and I had become pretty damn good at painting. So, after my last trip to rehab, I went back home to stay with my parents and started trying to get my life together. With the help of my parents, I purchased all of the tools that I needed to get started and a work van. I was now officially a painter and a business owner.

I was able to pick up small jobs, here and there. Mostly, I worked in larger areas outside of my hometown, where people didn’t know my name and my reputation. I would go to work and come straight home to Mom and Dads. During my free time, I became interested in how computers operate. I built several computers for myself. I became a nerd and a hermit. I shut myself off from the world, except for my escape with my “online friends.” I stopped hanging out with any of my old friends, changed my phone number, and changed my life. I had to leave behind everyone that I had associated with in the past if I was going to be somebody. I started developing a website for my company, and started focusing all of my time and energy on how to make money.

At age 36, I reconnected with the love of my life whom I hadn’t seen or talked to in 14 years. We started dating and she had just lost her job of 15 years in Nuclear Sales. I was working on a commercial project to paint a local park and I asked if she wanted to come one day and help out. We’ve worked together almost every day since then. That lady is now my wife and my business partner.

Together, we have accomplished more than I ever dreamed possible. I am often humbled by how far I have come in my life with the support of family. I am no longer known in my hometown as a “trouble maker.” Instead, I’m known for my work, my integrity, and honesty. People speak to me again and ask for me by name. To me, that is my greatest accomplishment one that I am forever humbled by.

Had to have "been there" to "be here". Amazing how life works out when you don't fight it. Great post.

Thanks everyone, since I wrote this I have had something wonderful happen in my life. If all goes well we will be adopting this little guy in a few months. My wife and I have been trying for several years and couldn't conceive.

My life is so good right now, his name will be Matthew Blake Johnson.
