Default Gut Feeling

Just had a call a while back, it went as so.
I get a call from my wife telling me some one wants a quote, but he doesn't want to call my cell since it is long distance.
So I give him a call.
"Hello" HO
"Hello, This is Gabe from Ewing Painting" ME
"How much does it cost to paint the ext. of my house."
HO
"I would have to look at it first."
ME
"WELLLL, I don't want to pay for a estimate" HO
"I give free estimate"
ME
"Well can you just tell me the average cost?"HO
"I don't have a average cost, I would have to look at it"ME
"I just want the cheapest price as I can get.HO

I would've told him the average job is somewhere between $1,000 & $25,000, so you can expect it to be somewhere around there.

Wing--

Had a guy call me last year in late October. This fellow wants a price for a large, exterior commercial job smack in the middle of Main Street USA. Says this guy: Need done this year. What will you charge me?

I say pretty much what you said. This fellow says pretty much what your fellow said. Serious inquiries? Not a chance?

Yes I have, and pissed me off afterward that someone was either

a. out to screw me over
b. doesn't care about my trade
c. just another stupid HO that doesn't understand what a true paint job entails
d. because he doesn't know/understand what he is trying to have done.. he will come back after it fails (whomever he hires..NOT ME.. and want either his money back or it fixed.. when he never paid for a good job to begin with..)

yes I have had those calls.

You should have told him:

Llame a sus amigos mexicanos. Pueden hacerlo para usted mejor y más barato que puedo.

I would have said, "well, what do you want to pay, I'll come look and see if I could do it for that"

i think all of us have had those calls. i have a local painter that i refer those jobs to. he pays me $50 per closed sale on those types of jobs. i get $50 in cash to not have to deal with people who "just want the lowest price." he can have all of those jobs he wants. he'll be out of business before he knows it and still thanking me all the way with cash.
