Hiring/labor is by far the most challenging aspect of my business

I pay well- 40 hr work weeks/no weekends-90% Interior jobs- nice clean work

I have a "core" group who have been with me awhile who are reliable and knowledgeable-good tradesman

We went through a bit of a growth spurt this year and WHOA- the cast of characters who came through can make a circus show blush

I Weed out pretty well- but its tough to really know who your getting

Like a blind date- alot of them say the right things and start out well

Its a process ive come to accept- ALWAYS be Hiring- You never know

Anyhoo, back to hiring. Many have mentioned criminal record checks. In a previous career I had to have potential volunteers get checks done due to confidential nature of our work.

Within the roughly 8 local jurisdictions I was scouting volunteers from, the various police departments would charge anywhere from $25-$80 for this service. Each record check was done specifically for the organization I was working for and couldn't be used if the person was trying to apply for positions with other organizations. Some people were literally forking out hundreds of bucks just to try and find a suitable volunteer position.

How do the policing agencies in the US deal with this when your screening potential employees?

No no no. If you do a backgound check and drug test, you eliminate 90% of your potential labor pool.

I worked for a corporation that stopped drug testing potential hires for their print operations. They couldn't staff the place.

Only cause I take note of it.
Outfits will 'boast' let's use that word. Boast
All employees are background checked. Criminal record. U know.
But then u happen to know all of f their employees hail from Mexico. Haha
I submit. That to boast or feel some sense of security from the results of a background check on a employee who spent a major chunk of life in Mexicao is misleading, silly, whatever.

Just had to call that out before someone boasted in the thread. To do so after would be rude,

with 37 years in this trade i've seen the good & bad new employees

for 14 years i worked as a general superintendent for a large commercial companies with 80+ painters

i've worked on 70% of Disney's new hotels in the 80's and 90's and painted a major Universal Studio hotel along with theme park rides & parks attractions

painted Harrah's New Orleans Casino in 1999

never had trouble with help

if they weren't a "finish" painter you put them on painting fire pipe, gas pipe, block walls, sanding doors, priming stucco, back rolling, spray helper or being a gouffer ... you could find work for them and maybe 1 day have a good painter

but fast forward to now ... 90% residential painting, need quality, speed and a painter that you can put in a occupied home with no worries

2 different ballgames , sure they are "painters" but 2 different styles

1'000 times harder finding a good residential repaint painter that has a driver license, no criminal record , can show up on time and fit's in a homeowners house

for me woman seem to be the best fit for payroll and a sub crew of men for a few jobs

as far as residential repaints company truck & phone makes a big difference as we work all over town

one of my biggest plus thing is give them a Fri or Mon off with pay once a month, you would be surprised how much roi you get with a 3 day weekend

We have no employees from Mexico. Most of ours hail from Central and South America. Regardless of what most politicians will have you believe about immigrants we have yet to find anyone that has passed a criminal background check in the US that has turned out to have a criminal background from their country of origin.

Our employees also have to be legal to work in the US. The US Immigration and Naturalization Dept of Homeland Security will find out if any of their applicants has a criminal record as it is usually grounds for entry into the country in the first place and certainly grounds of resident status or work authorization.

I've thought about doing on online poll about how many outfits have I-9s or use e-verify for their employees. We have done that for all but two of our employees since the rule was put in place.

Arturo. That's his name
Via Mexico. I'm sure it could be panama, Bolivia whatever.
Kool dude. He cracks me up.
See he's a big celeb in the town he grew up in. Nobody in the whole town really owns a car. Arturo has a car there he keeps parked for the few weeks a year he goes back to visit. You know so he's like a rock star, he has a car he keeps for two weeks a year. And the whole town nobody else has one. Lol
I submit that Arturo's whole little village, none of em got a record. Of any kind. I doubt they have birth certificates even.
