I am seeing more and more of this type of marketing everywhere. I do not see how one could stay in business painting at this price so in my opinion I see this as a marketing ploy. Your thoughts?

This is for walls only (go to his website) on a 15x15 room, customer supplies paint. So if he's a one man deal (hard to tell) he'll charge $100 for walls, $50 for ceiling, and $75 for trim. Total for a 15x15 room $225 labor only. He's got a lot of experience so he could probably knock this out in less than a day- say six hours. That's $37.50/hr, no overhead except maybe a roller and a couple of brushes. And, I don't know this for sure, but he may charge extra for color change/multiple colors. And, yes I think you right, as long as he's there why not add a few rooms or sell them on an exterior job.

I have also see this same marketing tactic used but with a three room minimum.

I'm not judging right or wrong- just explaining how this works.

$37.50 per hour as a one man show will put anyone out of business. That sort of explains his website, where its hosted and his proud picture. Wow.

PS: I thought once you painted for 20 years you didn't need blue tape anymore?

I thought the Italian history of finishes was more rooted in handcrafted artistry like venetian plaster. And wow, that guy looks pretty smart on his website.

There is a franchise called Five Star Painting and 99.00 a room is there trademark. One of there franchises started in my area last year. They advertised heavily, got big fast, and filed for bankruptcy only 19 months after opening their doors. One day I started getting lots of calls from painters looking for jobs, I think FiveStar had 60 painters loose there job when they shut down. I asked everyone that called me looking for a job how many 99.00 dollar rooms they painted and everyone responded quickly with "none"

It's merely a marketing ploy, people see the low price and call. Its the salesman's job to sell once they get to the house.

I don't like his reference to Italians.

Gives us all a bad name. Geeze, blue plastic and he's taping a ceiling? I don't know any of my ancestors who painted, they came from tuscany and did marble/iron ore mining, and I do 10 times better work. Heck, other than tromp windows, I still don't know about Italian painting. I'm sure it's nice but there are germans, americans, poles and even some mexicans who do comparble work.

I've come in to bid behind 5 star lots of times, and always taken the job.

The one guy is totally going for the real estate references. Hope none of my realtor customers are reading this, but realtors are notoriously cheap and have NO EYE for good work. They are not good references for quality.

I love the blue tarp for a drop cloth. And I do like his muscle shirt. The use of colourful texts on his website basically are his best marketing schemes.

Oh yeah, and I'll paint a room for $99 as long as its:
5 x 5, one coat, no prep, no ceiling, no windows, no doors, no baseboards, no trim, no furniture to move, can suck at doing so, and will do everything to get out of there as fast as possible - ALSO.

If I wanted 'scope' out homes for potential theft - advertizing and executing $99 paint jobs would be the ticket in. Think about it - you work a bunch of places for $99 - and make 10, 20, 30 g's in ripped off jewelry and what not. I think homeowners, if they want to gamble with their money - should do it in Vegas, and pay the professionals a professional rate.

Right on, plainpainter! People who think they can get it for $99 are in for an unpleasant surprise. Someone posted something here a few months back about what he tells his potential customers about low-ballers. It was really good stuff, I'll look back and maybe repost it.

p.s. I'm glad to see ******** in the thread. There's rumors been goin' 'round about him being banned! I say no way :no: WE WANT ********:thumbup:

$100 a room is an effective business tactic if trying to drive competition under. There will be even more of it.

In Xtreme competition, if you can cover your expenses and put a few dollars in your pocket and beat out competitors, they will be stuck with their overhead and zero dollars in their pocket.

Xtreme advertising tactics WILL get your foot in the door.
Perhaps the "Perfect Painter" might pick up extras and quickly move into the black...

The big question in a price war is, "How long can you hold out?"

I can see people going with a deal like that perhaps for a muffler on their car or something. The muffler franchise (M!*@$) is in every town, its a name we all know. But to consider a deal like this for in your home, the surfaces that you live with, look at, and touch on a daily basis is a little scary, especially when the service is being offered by a company that is not (as far as I know) well-established or reputable AND with a website that looks like that one does...as a smart man once said "hypnotized and overadvertised until we're numb at :censored: birth..."

I'm not convinced that this is an effective tactic.

First, statistically 90% of these guys will be history within 5 years. We had a similar franchise open here and they didn't last a year.

Second, they will develop a reputation as the "cheap painters", which is hardly an effective means for charging a reasonable rate.

Third, I am not aware of any of these "companies" using this tactic to gain market share with the intention of taking over a market. The only share they seem to gain is a spot in the unemployment line.

Undercutting the competition for the purpose of putting them out of business is a recipe for disaster. If you do it to others, someone can do it to you.

Long term success is achieved by offering superior value to the consumer.

Pressure pro mentioned $37.50 would put any one man show out of business, but I know a lot of painters who have been painting for a while that almost never see that per hour after materials. If a painter is getting 35-40/hr after materials, he is doing good over here.
