I have been painting for 15 years. While I can pull a bead and cut crisp lines free hand, I don't have as much experience spraying. We have done interior spray jobs, but not a whole lot exterior.

I would like to learn more about it; is there a class or seminar somewhere in the U.S. that teaches the ins and outs of spraying. They have classes for everything else, I would think you could take one like this as well?

I have been spraying for few months now, and let me tell you, you just can't make the money that i been making now, without it. (not that i'm showing off) its a fact. Now I know that the vetrans here dont' like it, don't need it and could probably put me to shame knowledge wise but, when you have three houses on the go and you are able to finish all the trim and ceilings in 2 days you know you are way ahead labour cost wise and time wise. As for seminars, well , let me put it this way, I worked with a painter who's been spraying since they invent it the dam thing and I watched him everyday, and he tought me everything he knew. But as soon as I picke up that gun I was a disaster, my point is spraying is one of those things that you have to learn hands on, I did, made lot of mistakes lol, but you will catch on, kind of like cutting with a brush. But if you have any questions email me [email protected]

Exterior spraying is a very valuable skill to learn. I had a couple 1 day jobs last year that I was bring in around and over 1-2K profit in. There is huge potential in the stucco coating area here in Winnipeg, as our weather extremes are crazy. As long as it is done efficiently, properly, and in a professional manner, it can fatten your wallet in no time. It can cut out so much time out of a job, its unbelievable. But you must make sure your application process when you spray is done properly, or you can have failures and call backs just as easily.

You cannot just pick up a spray gun and go. Just like you cannot pick up a brush and go.

hands on trial and error worked for me after watching others, also read some books or videos from your local library, that will put u in the right direction.
btw i have some training videos from binks from the 80's that i will let go for a case of my favorite beer of the day hieniken premium light:party: .
ps it's so easy a caveman/cavewoman can do it.:drink:

I used to teach spraying at the high-school level in the MA vocational system. Most of the schools no longer have paint shops though.

Are there any vo-techs in your area. I'll be glad to put a seminar together if there are enough intersted parties. I do similar seminars for contractors for safety related issues. I usually need about 20 people to make it work (cover travel exp and salary)

Spraying seminar

A good start would be to turn the pressure as far down as it will go and still spray. Like you would spraying doors, use the gun like a brush and do small areas. Trying to crank it up and go hard on exterior only leaves overspray everywhere. It helps to mask off windows and use cardboard shields. Just take it slow at first and you will be amazed how much faster you can get a house done.

I would have to disagree with turing the pressure down..when you do that it shoots a line you need the right tip the right pressure with the material being used...you only get this knowledge form the way you spray everybody different...but true maybe start on some old stuff..maybe the inside your own shed or something ..just to see how it works...looking at others helped me get my technique

You are right nu. Turn the pressure down to just above the point where you shoot that line. Try to spray in shorter bursts, this has really helped my business grow. I watch most of my competitors still sling a brush and it takes at least twice as long to brush than spray.

ive shot hundreds of exteriors,,,,,,bag em off, and shoot em

turn your pressure down, use correct sized tips,,,,,use cardboard sheilds,,,,,also keep a few 4x8 sheets of blue/pink styrofaom insulation on hand (i like 1/2") and sheild with that,,,,,

use strips of 1/4" plywood for the foundation

use professional metal sheilds for some tight work, and keep it rinsed off

when the paint accumulates on the styrofoam, have your spraybitch rinse it off, and lay it in the sunny lawn to dry

be careful with paint accumulation on sheilds,,,,,it can contaminate adjacent surfaces,,,,keep em rinsed

turn your pressure down for doing some items, and crank it up for siding,,,,you can use your airless almost like an hvlp if you turn it down and use a small tip,,,,,

turn it down till it "starts to finger" and then turn it up just past that point,,,,,,,,as the tip wears youll notice more "fingering"

learn when to spray, and when its just as easy or stress free to brush and roll,,,,,,,,,,dust a few roofs, and youll see why this is important

there are times when you can shoot almost everyting using a sheild, and then fall back and tighten up with a brush using flat paints/stains

if you dust somthing, clean it up quickly,,,,,,be set up for this as you spray,,,,,,,have a clean five with water and a scrub brush just in case, and even a bottle of dish soap,,,,,,,its best to be prepared

throw a drop around shrubs, and tie em off with a rope to shoot behind em

you can make several thousand dollars in a day if you play your cards right,,,,,,,,but learn when its best to just brush and roll,,,,,,its less stressful at times.

watch out for windy days, and dusting shingles

get people to move cars

if you dust a window, blade it off,,,,,who cares??? be set up for it

i shot a pretty big aluminum sided house yesterday,,,,,,,everything except the dormers,,,,,,i sent my helper up there to stroke em out by hand,,,,,

could i have took the time to mask, bag, drop off, and protect????? yes i could have done all that,,,,,,,but instead i weighed my options,,,,,,and it was faster, easier, safer, less stressful to stroke em out

ive been shooting homes for 18 years, if you have any questions, please ask,,,,,,good luck

Thanks for the link Wolverine. SSPC offers important training for the industrial coating industry. I am familiar with one of the locations, and know them to be very reputable.

I suspect the training will go beyond single component paints, and provide techniques on spraying epoxies, urethanes, and plural component coatings.
