don't use a hard impervious mortar on Adobe. sounds like an aesthetic shame to me and you run into the risk that the adobe will crack even more once it is submitted to the pressure of the mortar.
is that a whole room? are you really going to paint that? why not do clay plaster such as american clay. it will be much more beautiful and easier at the same time. Also much more fun!

That may be wise...
Adobe is an old school, inferior method of building, with certain aesthetic value. As with plastered walls, you got to enjoy the cracks!

I shall renig, and declare my method of repair to be, most likely, possibly a waste of time, and unwise.
