Hi All,

I have not used Aura as of yet (mostly SW and a few others) and I have been reading about Aura's dry time. Normally for most clients we spray and backroll. It seems from what I can read on BM site this will work fine, but am slightly nervous because of dry time.

So, how many out there have sprayed and backrolled and what were your results?

For those that have used Aura quite a bit, have you found just rolling 2 coats is better (though more time then spray/backroll?) or really I am asking what you feel is best way to apply.

Also have potentially a new client that wants me to paint prior to any trim work being up. This would mean I would not have to cut in first. But after trim is up, I will need to touch up around trim, so can I get good results cutting in "AFTER" trim is up.

Has no one used Aura by spraying and back rolling? There are a number of painters that say Aura is great, so I would assume there would be some replies.

At $50 per gallon, I would not consider spraying interior Aura. Too much wasted product. I am sure it would work although I would want to thin it due to it's thickness before running it through an airless.

If you are concerned about dry time you can always add BM extender.....518-00. This is an extendered designed for waterbourne paints such as Aura.

So far we have had none of our customers spray....strictly roll or brush thus far.

i UNDERSTAND THAT aURA WILL NOT PRODUCE FLASH MARKS ON TOUCH UP AREAS. YOU SHOULD BE OK TOUCHING UP AFTER TRIM IS INSTALLED

I agree with Pinnacle. Aura is pretty thick to be running through your gun. Diluting Aura is like watering down a fine glass of 12 year old scotch with some tap water. I say roll out two top coats of perfection and admire. It has been working for me so why change a good thing.

Is there a particular reason you want to spray and backroll? Time issues, certain look, HO request? Just wondering. Keep up the good work fella's!

Hi,

We just sprayed Aura semi gloss on trim and had great success.
We didn't dilute it at all because we were concerned that we would lose the self leveling properties.
I have never sprayed and back rolled with it, but if you have questions I have found BM contractor support very helpful.

are you kidding me to thick to spray? , thin out? , buy a good sprayer and spray away. keep in mind cutting in with a brush over a spray finish is hard to blend and after the trim guys and carpet layers beat up the walls there will be a lot of marks every where maybe spray and back roll 1st coat let trim go up and cut and roll 2nd coat it works well for me

Spraying Aura

We sprayed the ceilings (Graco rig w/17 thou tip and no backroll) of a new construction home with Aura matte finish and found that the result although acceptable was inferior to the normal Pittsburgh ceiling paint we like to use. Since the Aura matte is not dead flat some lap lines were visible with one coat and the ceilings had to be repainted. I would not recommend it for ceilings unless the low VOC factor is a requirement which was the case for us on this job. On the walls the eggshell seemed to touchup nicely. The satin finish on the trim was tough to work with (we cut it a bit) because of the quick dry time which seemed to enhance brush marks. Would use the extender in the future. The wall paint did'nt seem to dry as quickly as the hype in fact it rolled out like most of the competition. Again, unless you need VOC free, for the price I don't see the point in using it. The regular BM line works just fine.

I still think it touches up way better then the regal line. Also the Matte lays off way better then regal matte. The matte washes nicely and looks good after the washing, regal never was good at that.

I still think the price which the client pays for is worth it. I have gotten good one coat coverage 60% - 70% of the time and to me thats money in my pocket. As they come out with the new lower priced line comes out with waterborne tints I think Aura may suffer a little.

I was so frustrated with BM but with the introduction of the waterborne tints they have gotten me back to them for now. I get good service from my dealer and that's worth money to me too..

I have not tried Aura on trim as I like Muralos Ultra for that, I wonder how that product would be with waterborne tints...

jmc.....BM just came out with a new ultra flat waterbourne ceiling white as well as all 4 bases. This product will use the Gen-x colorant platform. So far so good for us.....we just brought it in and are selling it little by little. BM number 508-09 for white......

It has a 1-1.5 sheen level which is dead flat. Awesome hide too. We used it in its experimental stage in a 4000 sq ft new construction house and we got incredible spread rates, hide and NO lap marks or spray marks. Touch up is fantastic. For ceilings only due to its flatness.

I have had great luck brushing Aura on trim. It really seems to flow well for its dry time. Although, I would add a little of their extender. Side by side Aura with a little extender was smoother than WB Impervo with no extender.

Or are the up front R&D costs too much? The dealers will support you if it is worth their investment long term.

Yea I hear ya, but it would be nice to see how that paint would work with waterborne tints.

I use it often. Doing a 90 gallon house now. With aura i find it’s easier to have 2 people back rolling as I spray. 1st goes over and spreads it out and the second right behind them combing the walls. currently experimenting with adding extender to give more working time. My guys really struggle with it. It’s their first time using it. They now see why I’m so picky on our regular jobs
