need some advice we are doing a high end new home
the h.o is running it so there is no control on trades quality right now (except for painter of course)problem is the taper did such a bad job ie unsanded patches everywhere tape line showng couple of ceiling ones split joint s starting to bulge .all the sanding has deep scratches marks
we showed the ho this stuff and said it needed to be fixed before we will put any finish coat on
the taper said it was the painters job to fix this stuff
well after a profanity laced conversation lol he said he would fix if they paid him more h.o. agreed to (dumbasses)
question is how can we cover our asses on this i dont want to put finish on and have them say fix this or that
what kind of document and what would you put down on it to make the ho agree that they are satisfied with the walls (tapers job)and wont hold us liable for anything they dont like (we will fix what we can but not at the expense of losing money or man hours for free)

If you get it worked out where you want to do it, it may be useful to take some photos of the walls and ceilings before you prime. It is impossable to hide bad finishing with paint, if you have a screwed up finishing job, it will show up in your walls, no matter how good you paint it. If they get it acceptable (sounds like it needs another coat to me) a high build primer back rolled with at least 3/4" knapp will help. I wouldn't try to get by with just spraying primer and not back rolling it, not on walls that are allready less than good and allready under the magnifying glass. Good Luck and let us know how it comes out. I hate it when finishers do that kind of stuff gives us all a hard time and a bad name.

Ya I hated it when PDCA pulled the Standards off line. I had thought when they where made was to teach the dumb GC and so on. That you can't walk all over some one. Ex PDCA Member
Many painting companies have some or all pdca standards on their websites.

By doing a quick google for
PDCA P1-04.pdf

I found this.

http://www.fitzgeraldpainting.com/pages/pdf/

With more web sleuthing in the past, I found other methods of accessing all the standards.

The pdca makes it hard to gain access to their standards, but it is not an impossible task.

I wish I knew the mindset behind NOT making these accessable to all.

I would not put any paint on the areas that are not ready! Id show the HO. (and its a shame you gotta even defend yourself with it!) As to why somebody thats buildin a high end home would allow anybody! painter, carpenter, plumber, ect. to give halfassed work??? thats plum crazy! Id be leary of this HO.,, hes headin down a path of lawsuits

I agree with Crow on this one. either by design or just the nature of a HO/GC that allows poor workmanship will at some point want to recapture his damages/losses. Make sure you document, photograph, and have yourself covered for the day the "summons is delivered".

In the case of the GC or the HO, in the heat of the moment, on a tight schedule they will tell you to just go ahead and do it...even if "it" is wrong, in the interest of hitting their deadline.

It is only after the homeowner has moved in that they demand that you come back in and fix the poor work they asked you to do. And of course, conveniently, at that point they are still holding your last check.

I think of it as DEW...gotta see the Distant Early Warnings of this sort of trap.

I'm sure many of us have had our doubts about continuing work for the sake of a "deadline", but on the other hand, we do not want to appear to be a difficult prima donna that holds up the project (OK, some of us THRIVE on being a prima donna :whistling2: ), but still we do not want to be held responsible if/when our fears come to fruition.

We can protect ourselves AND keep the deadlines when we write a decent contract and add addendums to it when we see suspicious "STUFF".

We also can demonstrate our professionalism (while protecting our bacon) when we refer to the PDCA standards when trying to illustrate correct conditions and who is responsible.

Keep a camera in the truck to record all suspicious situations. You may only be bit in the ass once in ten times, but you will be thankful you covered it that one time.

Sometimes you just got to get the paint on to meet deadlines, which everything is.

If the painter is not responsible for the taping, then he or she has nothing to worry about.

I think V is saying to spot this long before you sign up.
