Morning all, I'm Joe here from NJ. Retired painter here with 25+ years of swinging a brush. Have a Q about painting an Oak sink base cabinet. It's in good shape, no flaking etc. I like oak but the Admiral wants it painted. I'm worried about bleeding. Any suggestions on doing this? I've really never done cabinets before, so I'm asking what would you do. I will be painting it a BM Charlotte Slate, latex eggshell. Thanks.

Scuff sand, oil primer (BM Fresh Start or Z's Cover Stain), two top coats of enamel

I wouldn't suggest an eggshell wall paint-but if you had to, that'll go over the primer fine

I'd really suggest BM Satin Impervo Enamel, either the oil/alkyd, or the waterborne, rather than the Regal Eggshell
Much tougher...longer lasting...more washable...etc....

If you have any laquer thinner laying around do a good wash with it. B'rooms are notorious for invisble chemicals, sprays, soaps etc. The rougher grain oak may be hiding something down in the grain. I always keep some steel wool around for this reason.

Actually, the bath sink base isn't going in a bath where there a high moisture rate. It's for a utility room that I am redoing. It was there when we bought our house. We just want it to contrast with the color of our kitchen which is BM Charlotte Slate and countertops and washer and dryer are black. I've done cabinets once back when I first statred out and vowed to never again as to the high labor time, cranky customers, etc. I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about. Our kitchen cabinets were out of the 70's and wife wanted me to paint them so I took the easy way out. Ripped them all out and redid the whole kitchen, ceiling to floor. Just got done as I did it all myself,, 32 days total. The only part I hated was the painting of ceiling, soffets and 2 walls.

As for advice? more on that later.
