Are you the type of person who is stuck on one way of doing something? Are you old school? Your way or the highway? Or are you flexible and able to mold yourself and your choices/techniques, etc, to keep up with modern times and take emotions out of it? What is one thing you will absolutely NOT change either due to stubborness or good reason?

I like working out of a paint tray instead of a 5 gal. bucket when rolling. My neighbor(who is a union painter) always bust my balls about this. It is most comfortable for me to do it this way because this is the way i have learned. Other than that, i am very flexible with learning knew things and using different techniques. Rolling out of a paint tray, i will not give up.

I don't get this 3/8" nap thing these kids swear by
I doesn't leave less stipple than the 1/2"
Well, maybe with crappy paints it does...but I can't tell the difference with premium paints
Just slows production as far as I can tell

IMO the leveling characteristics of the paint have way more to do with the stipple then the nap size (at least 3/8 vs 1/2 anyway)

Yeah, I hear ya Tim. 5'ers are only good when you're doing 1 color all day long or for exteriors. Those union guys are always trying to toot there own horns anyway. IMO, they are production guys..I've worked with a few of them on some interior repaints (not good  ).

John..I actually changed my choice of naps...I only use 1/2" now and swear by them. I used to use 3/8", but realized it was time to throw some F-ing paint on the wall!

But I'm not stuck on everything...hey I gave it a try when the kids had a cow when I whipped out the 1/2"

Just didn't do anything as far as I can tell

If I'm working with a crew, if I have to I'll switch to 3/8 to make sure we're all on the same page

Tim uses a tray, and LIKES it. *snicker snicker*

Hey, J/K

Self-priming my ass. If it needs a primer, I use one. And always under wallcovering.

I don't use any oil finish paints anymore, only primers. I also am lost without my purdy 3" angled. I vowed to rent a lift for anything over 32ft.

The painting industry offers a multitude of variables. You have to adapt to the situation. For instance, a paint tray would have no business on a swing stage, and there'd be no reason to bring a five gallon set up with a 9" roller to paint kitchen cabinets.

Things I'll never give up...
1) I will never roll out of a tray.
2) I will never use larger than a 3/8 nap on smooth walls.
3) I'll never get rid of my Woosters.

He used a 5er today although all the rooms being done are same color. Can't wait to see when we have multi colors going on. Plus, he used 1/2 nap today.:whistling2:

That could end up being a bit of a pain if it happened daily, but in the 8 years I've been painting I don't remember ever rolling more than 3-4 colors in the same day. As "highspeed" as I am, I doubt I could do 9+ rooms in a day.

As for the clean up... I usually clean all my buckets, cutpots, brushes, ect over a beer in my slop sink when I get home. I can't afford to toss out my brushes & cutpots, so what's an extra bucket or 2 added in? Takes me a whole 15-20 minutes & I don't have to worry about being all pretty or in a hurry. I timed myself today with a dirtier than average 5, and it took me approximately 1 minute to clean. I think I could deal with a few extra minutes for the extra buckets. If I was really worried about it though I'd just use bucket liners.

Now for my reasoning... With a tray on average rooms, you have to stop & fill it up a few times which takes more time than that 1 minute it would've taken to just use a bucket & clean it out. You also have to be extra careful & slow down when dipping so you get no drips/spray outside of the tray. Also a pain to keep moving the tray as you roll. With a bucket, you fill it up half as many times, no splatter, and it's easy to move along as you work. Just my opinion though to each his own.

@Tim... Actually I was being sarcastic, but I do prefer 3/8. That's another lesson for another day my friend. ;)
