A paintin comrad up in the city has run a plan cross me and after hearin him out he might be on to somthing, He is going to try to start a customer credit thing, monthly payments, he thinks he can corner the market in the area with the makin payments on gettin work done. round here there is lot folks that cant afford to shell out 6k on anything, but,, they can afford 1-2 hundred a month, he thinks hell be rollin in cash, now I can see IF and a big IF folks pay on time and dont just blow him off where a guy could pick up allota work. but, I told him to never put any out of his pocket $ in any jobs. let the customer pay for all matt. then a fair down payment, it could work for him,?? (hes really havin hard time findin work.) has anybody ever heard of this? seems to be very very risky, (specually round here) hes gonna run a add in the local paper, Im sure hell get allotta calls. but in the long run is it doable?? he thinks in time hell have thousands in payments each month after its all over? I think hell be swampped in welfare folk jobs, and stuck tryin to collect, dead end road?

Crow,

The idea can work, but you need to decide what business you are in. Are you a painting contractor or a finance company? If you go into the finance business, you will have collections issues and you need to be able to cover that. You'll need to write off a portion of those receivables, etc. You'll likely get lots of work, but you may not get paid for it.

Not that I have bee too succesful at this myself lately - but I think if we're hurting for business, we shouldn't look for ways to 'lighten' the load from the customers wallet. Instead we should be looking for ways to market to acquire more leads and increasing our chances of getting more work. About your friend - he's the typical bottom feeder that most of us can't stand - his excuse is that he needs to feed his family - where in reality, he leaves money on the table and ruins the market for the rest of us. If he keeps it up, he will eventually go out of business - there is just no way of being 'succesful' in this trade and being cheap at the same time. The second your buddy tries to raise his price - his customers will dump him in a new york second. Because the type of customers he has aquired are only loyal to the price and not the contractor. And he will never have enough cash flow to increase his business.

Why doesn't your friend start to accept credit cards? He get his money all at one time, and the HO makes payment to the finance company.

Well that should be a red flag right there. If they can't get a CC or financed, it's probably for a reason. That being the case, he probably shouldn't depend on them to actually pay up.

It would be wiser to atleast do a rent to own paint job. Don't pay up, we come take the paint off with a sprayer & paint stripper. Better have an attorney write up this agreement though to protect him for any other damages/injuries caused.

Then my best advice is to market to better clients. Last thing I want is to paint somebody's home while they are lying through their tooth about paying me.
