Hey everyone,
Just wanted to see if I could get some advice.
I have been asked to give an estimate for a condo association to paint two 2-story brick buildings.
The buildings are 19 feet high and 228 feet long. The windows are vinyl so they won't need to be painted.
One of my biggest concerns is that I have very little experience spraying.
I have always done residential repaints and never needed to venture beyond a brush and a roller.
Is it completely ridiculous to roll the whole exterior?
Any help would be appreciated by this rookie trying to learn..
Thanks in advance!

How do you quote a sentence of what someone posts and not the whole thing?
I don't know if there's another way, but I hit the "quote" button
Then I remove what I don't want from the words in between the code <quote=painttofish;5142> and </quote> (replace < and > with [ and ])

You can't remove the 'code' parts though...then it messes up

spraying lessons

Hmmm..
Guess I might have to pass on this one..
I take pride in doing a good job and if I can't
do it right I'll walk away before I do it wrong..
Thanks guys..
I'll keep thinking about my options..

I didn't mean that you should walk away, but if you bid it to cut and roll I wouldn't think your bid would be competitive with others. hire a spray guy, you backroll?
This is good advice. You probably won't make the same money as if you were spraying, but you'd get the job and make some money. You could also learn how to spray, perhaps pick up a spray man, and gain a customer.

By the time you're done, you'll have a good handle on spray technique.
Just watch your overspray!
Use plenty painters plastic over nearby things to protect them...
and that means...which way is that slight wind blowing?
You're gonna have to backroll anyway.

Thank you guys for all of the good advice.
I'm checking around now.. examining my options..
The only thing about spraying this thing is that it is
down by the beach so it is usually pretty windy down there..

Well, there you have it! Perhaps, based on the information WE have,
spraying might never have been the best option. If it might be advantageous to use 18" production rollers on some sections.

Any way you look at it, surface coating is labor intensive work.
Whether by pad, brush, roller, or spray, they are just a delivery system to get the product to the intended surface.
Most of the time it is best to massage the product applied to wall surfaces
when applied by spray, anyway.
Use every method available to Get R Dun !

Rolling Ext Brick

It is very windy down there most of the time.
Can I get a group consensus about rolling this thing?
The buildings are two stories and about 19' high.
Thanks guys. I really appreciate the help.
I'm kicking myself in the ass for not learning how to spray
when I was younger. I worked for a big company when I was
about 18 for a while doing new construction. I got some spray
time there, but not enough to feel confident tackling a job in this setting.
If rolling this property is not an option I'm looking towards sub-ing out
that phase of the job. Once again, thanks for all of the feedback guys.

Dude, Think outside the box. This is a real money maker for you. Hire a spray guy for a few days tell him to stay close to the surface because you will back roll anyway. Even if you pay him 200 a day you should proffit 10 grand based on that squ. footage. Mike
