Had this happen in my town not long ago. Entire house burned down. Everyone in town got a crash course on spontaneous combustion.

Great reminders!!!

I try to be careful, and always throw oily rags into a bucket of water as soon as I'm done using them, but you can't be too careful. It only takes one time.
I've never had one combust though I've seen a few smoking. I never want to have that 'one time'.

A few years ago I was sanding the finish off a conference room table and I kept smelling smoke. I saw the plastic dust collector on the sander had melted. The saw dust and finish had spontaneously combusted. Just a FYI it is not only oil soaked rags. Gas Composite material Camera accessory Auto part Personal protective equipment

Yikes. Important reminder!
I usually take oil rags outside as soon as it’s spent so it has time to dry out in the air before I put them into the car. Years ago when I worked at Valley, the rags were smoking just as I pulled up from the long trip back from DC. Got them out into the parking lot just in time.
