There have been a couple of posts lately about where to get the cheapest supplies possible. If I am reading the board correctly, they have been removed.

If you are in this business and spending alot of time trying to figure out how to get your roller covers $.15 cheaper or tack cloths $.07 cheaper, then you may have bigger problems than what you are paying for roller covers and tack cloths. Do you have any idea what a small percentage your paint sundries are in your pricing?

While its important to watch your pennies these days, its also important to use your time and energy wisely in your business. In my experience, the time is much better spent building strong relationships with your local suppliers and earning the best possible pricing. You dont just walk into Sherwin Williams and ask them to match an online wholesaler. That would be like a customer asking you to match a national paint franchise.

Alot of guys complain that their local suppliers all suck. Well, if you are doing your job, you must spend alot of time educating customers and employees. It only makes sense that your supplier needs and wants to hear your expectations as well. If you just complain and go elsewhere, no progress is made. If you aren't doing much volume with a store, what incentive do they have to give you better pricing?

Have lunch with the owner of the store, and help them to better understand a paint contractor's needs in products and service. You may be surprised at how much they appreciate the feedback. If you work with them, they will work with you. Ever notice while you are at the paint store that alot of homeowners wander in asking for names of paint companies? If you are a schmoe who complains about prices, you are unlikely to pick up many referrals.

There are some pieces of equipment that you cant get locally and are better off dealing with an online firm that specializes in that market. I have dealt with a couple lately on pressure washers and supplies that have blown me away with their knowledge, service, value and delivery. Coming to this site looking for the cheapest possible way to get miscellaneous supplies is another story.

Manufacturers, paint stores and paint companies are all part of the same supply chain. Be careful what bridges you burn over a few pennies.

Good comments. Thanks

Just an FYI. I did remove some posts and accounts last night because one company decided to sign up for multiple accounts and basically spam us to get their name out there. I tried to warn them but the warnings didn't help and it was getting out of control.

Of course any established member is allowed to share where they are buying products but we don't allow companies to come and self promote on this site. Especially when they try to sneak around rules and sign up for so many accounts.

Thanks.

Penny wise and pound foolish. I'm not opposed to saving money, and I don't think you are either, but one's time has a value.

As you note, sundries are a small part of the price-- typically 1% or less for us. Which means, even if I could cut the price of sundries in half, we'd save less than $20 on an average job. I can make far more money in an hour by selling a job than I can by haggling with someone over the price of masking tape.

There was something fishy about it, for first time posters to be asking about cheap supplies instead of going rates...

At one time I did have a great relationship with SW. Now days just to get a call from a rep is a miracle. Let a loan knowing who he is or a store manger is they change like you hopefully do your underwear.Let along all of the thing they have cut back. We at one time had great Pro-shows where you could met reps from there suppliers and learn somethings. Get great leads. Now days all I get is notes of price increases the day they are happing. Not trying to steal the thread just a comment for Scott.

A note on Sherwin Williams - don't you guys think they have become way too commercialized in the first place? My feelings - way over priced, and a bunch of idiots behind the counter. I had a customer ask me to use Resilience on their home so I called my local SW store and placed the order four days in advance. When I went in to pick it up, they had never placed the order in the first place and told me it would take another week to get in. I made the dumb decision to wait and a week later - guess what - still no paint. I went to my regular PP vendor and bought 15 gallons of Timeless and was in and out in 20 minutes.

I honestly would take my SW guys over BM any day and here is why... They may not be the best at matching paint, or product knowledge, but they will do everything in their power to get me what I need, when I need it, and at the best price possible. Just for an example the manager drove an hour and a half round trip the other day (in her personal car ) just to go to the other store and get me tray liners. Now mind you they hadn't had any for almost a week, but the fact of the matter is they were not only willing to do it, but it was their own idea. I myself would rather be treated with priority at SW, then go to BM and be treated like just another contractor. Do love the aura though.

finding the best price is called, business. in small business thats what you do. paint stores are becoming way overpriced. I will always get my paint from paint stores, but if i can save money on brushes and stuff I will. They get there paint really cheap anyway.

For you guys who buy online. What is the cost of your average order? I'm wondering how you offset the shipping.
The last 3 orders I placed were all around $100 each. Usually pay around $10 shipping. Comparing against store prices AFTER shipping I saved $175.00. Main thing I save money on is brushes.

Not only did I save money, but also time & gas running around looking for the things I want which most paint stores usually don't carry around here. Asked multiple times for special orders & they never follow through. Much nicer clicking a few buttons, saving money, and having it on my door step in 3-4 days.
