Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm too lazy to search :jester:

No, couldn't find what I wanted.

My woodworking, non-computer brother wants to know what is a good, clear, exterior wood preservative. Will be used on fence elements of pine, cedar, and mahogany.

I know Cabot and Thompson and even Calif used to make some decent products, but I know not in these days of low VOC's

thx

Are you looking for a clear clear Bill?
I ask because not all clears are actually clear
I've probably put on more Cabot Clear Solution Natural 3000 than anything else all told
But it's not actually clear
It's got a teeny bit 'o' gold, and an eensy bit of brown
That makes it sort of blend together the various shades and tones in a old but freshly cleaned and wood brightened deck
(Used on a finely weathered and aged driftwood colored deck w/o wood brightening however, it will turn the whole thing graphite)

For clears, I've not been impressed with the (wax based) Thompson's, and felt the SW clear was only mildly better
The Wolman's Raincoat (oil- or water-based) seems a little better
But I haven't used enough of it really to make a for sure call

The Sikkens Clear is actually clear...and really frikken good
If you can find it, it might be worth a look into

Hey Slick what Sikkens you thinking of? I use there stuff all the time and I don't recall they have a clear for decks.

They do have the clear for door and windows

Also for those who care Sikkens is coming out with a semi transparent SRD to complement there original SRD product.

Unfortunately it is confusing with the Sikkens
I'm pretty sure it's SRD that has a clear though

Most of the others it's that 1, 2, or 3 coats of color
1 coat color, two coats clear
2 coats color (for more UV protection), 1 coat clear

I though there was one were you could do all clear, but they didn't suggest it

Hey Guys,

Bills brother just wants to put something on the damn fence...
Thanks (roflmao) Scott (still roflmao),

You're right, all he wants is a clear coat for the damn fence project he's embroiled in. BUT, I DO love confusing him with too much info when he's working outa trade <BIG EVIL BROTHERLY GRIN>

I'll try to give him the opinions expressed here.

thanks all.
